As Bradw said, people see a pic of Lance with a woman and a glass of wine and suddenly he's an unfocused, womanizing alcoholic.

I think "womanizing" part might not be so untrue (though I think that's probably a harsh word). Hasn't he had a few affairs?

Unfortunately, that's one of the drawbacks to becoming a puiblic figure. It CAN affect his riding because it's a distraction. As a contributor to the LAF, I also want a spokesman who rises above the regular pitfalls of stardom. On the other hand, I'm not gonna stop contributing. Just sad when someone you admire displays some of the less admirable human traits. Having an affair is pretty low.

PS Please don't get the idea that I'm anti-Lance. Perhaps I just hold heros (a word that applies to LA, I think) to a high standard. If it DOES turn out that he's running around dating before the divorce is finalized (combined with other affairs), I'm not sure I'll be pulling for him as hard, primarily because one of my reason for pulling for LA is a kind of moral "statement". That's one reason why I'm anti-Ulrich. Drunk-driving = "Sorry buddy. No support." I know it's a tough subject and sometimes I'm glad I'm not rich and famous. On the other hand, I hope that if I was, the money and fame would be reward enough and that I wouldn't assume that maturity and common sense (talking about Ulrich here) was optional.

And wlevey: you BET I hold him to a higher standard. I'm a school teacher and I'M held to a higher standard than the slob on the street. The more you're given... Lance is welcome to be human. I'm all for it. On the other hand, there are a few things I absolutely have a problem with, no matter who you are. LA appears to be approaching one of them...

More Ullrich Training Hard

It seems to me that Jan wants it more this year. Sure LA is talking about being disappointed with this years race but Jan seems to be reaching a level of LA's determination. I feel Jan has exorcised his demons, seen that he is back at the top of his game and in 04 in france he's going in for the kill. I haven't been following cycling for more than 6 months but of all the stories I have heard of Jan's drug problems, weight issues, drinking problems, that all seems to be done. We saw how lean he was in july, what do they call him? the german diesel? Now he's a father too so he's more mature, plus being on t-mobile now will also help his chances at a win. I would be lying if I said I think Lance is the favorite next year. If everyone thought the constant attacks against him this year on alpe d'huez (I think thats were it was, before beloki went down) were a good battle I'm expecting next year to be a nuclear world war!

He also represents how people can overcome increadable adversary in their lives (abandoned by his father, abused by his step-father and then Cancer!!!) to acheive their dreams (and in his case probably exceed them).

Lance is just doing what people do when a relationship fails - trying to regain stability and focus in his life. Most of us feel better if we have someone special who shows us that they care (and yest I believe Sheryl is capable of that). This is a normal human need. The law only says he can't get married until the divorce is final!! As I understand it, Lance and his wife are getting what is usuall called an uncontested divorce, where both parties are in agreement that they want to end the marraige.

How about supporting the RIDER for is acheivements as a RIDER and not judging him (and not supporting him) for being human and having the same human needs we all have.
LA is paid to be a cyclist, a public figure and a representative of his sponsors. His job is to hold himself to a higher level. His personal life IS in the spotlight and he is well remunerated for it, I'm sure.

These people aren't paid to cycle, they are paid to be heroes to all the kids out there (who end up riding Treks and wearing Nike, coincidentally).

Yup, I think you're right. This year, Armstrong will be training more alone - sans team, and @ home in Texas. He will also not be doing the same pre-Tour races that he's done on the way to winning his other 5 Tours. Why change a winning formula? At the opposite end of the spectrum, there seems to be a new, and VERY confident Jan Ulrich. What kind of bizarro world are we living in?

This is going to be a great Tour to watch, regardless to the outcome. I can't wait.

I'm no coach, but seriously.... training at Christmas? All that mileage? Ready to race in January? Dang, either he is mr. dynamo or he will peak waaaaaaay too soon for the Tour in July.

They really don't understand Lance's training schedule. Lance is SUPPOSED to be off- resting and getting ready to gear up for the base mileage training (and he doesn't need much time for that since he has a phenomenal aerobic base already) in January. He makes no bones about his training schedule, and it hasn't really varied a lot from the last few years. He lays low and recovers from a stressful season, then in January, kicks into high gear and starts his base training and gets into that wind tunnel. Sheesh, they're acting like he's sexin' it up with Sheryl Crow and partying out all night long and killing himself. He ain't Jan- Jan was the one that got wasted in bars and took recreational drugs and didn't take his training seriously, not Lance. Lance is just doing what Lance always did between seasons.

Again, I'm no elite coach or anything, but if this dude is smart, he'd be training to peak probably 3 times in the season- one big race in May, one big race in June, and one big race in July. Perhaps one big (mini) race in August, then some easy as pie kind of stuff in September before he comes down off his periodization program sometime in early November. Then he can afford to go on tour with Sheryl Crow next winter, and let Lance find someone else to hang with on their tour.

We'll see how the new coaching works. I'm thinking at the rate Jan is going, he'll be pretty freakin' tired by July if he's already racing in January and expected to keep that level up until July. Either that, or he's one monster to be seriously feared when the Tour de France happens along, and from the looks of it, he's gonna need all the strength he can get with those time trials!

What is up with the "affair" whisper campaign on the previous page of posts.

If we're going to talk about athletes being held to a higher standard I think we need to start with three letters: NBA. oh, wait. Maybe I meant NFL.

If you're seriously going to have that conversation, cycling is not the place to start the dialog.

Besides that,

Why are people concerned about a glass of wine? Lance openly talks about his joy of beer consumption.

I just hope that Lance reads these posts that say Jan wants it more than him, that will be all the motivation he needs. I have to tell you though, (I can't believe I'm going to say this) I hope that Lance wins this one and retires. I don't like this talk of him coming back for 2005. I really admire the cycling of Jan and would love for him to win another Tour, but I can't possibly root for him when Lance is in the mix.

I'd love to see Lance race at the best form that he can, until he knows his body is too far past the peak. I think it would be best to see Armstrong dethrowned in the tour by being beaten in the race, rather than by retiring
I'd like to see Ullrich 'carry the torch' by beating Armstrong in the event... whatever year that happens. (not that I'm sure that Ullrich will be the next tour winner after Armstrong)
I just don't like it if a rider retires without a fight.

Thats right.
Riding a bike while getting hammered (we all know how tipsy lance was on that final podium this year)
Kissing multiple women, while married, while your wife is there, while your kids are there!
I think his sponsors should abandon him

First of all, I have my own money. Secondly, I did not have sexual intercourse with that man! In my defense, consider this obvious fact. I donít care how great of an athlete Lance is, how could I go from a man with both testicles to a *********?

All I wanna do is have some fun, and I got a feeling that Iíll need more than one!

Well, gang, I think I've got this one figured out. Lance is not only a superb athlete, but also a devilish tactician. He is using Sheryl Crow as a beard. Lance is out training 10, 12 or even 14 hours a day. It takes only a few minutes to put on a suit, grab a glass of wine and pose for a quick snapshot with a pop star. His publicist can then post that photograph on a few well-chosen websites. Over in Germany, Jan Ullrich will see it and think "Aha! Lance is not training! He has gone Hollywood! Victory is mine! Maybe I'll have another bratwurst and a hit of coke !"

Clever, eh?

As for Christophe B, I'm afraid I'm a newer fan of LA (at least as far as cycling). '99, '00 were more "an American won! yay!" '01 & '02 were "That American was Lance Armstrong, who survived a battle w/ cancer and won #3 & 4." This past year was "I'v read the bio, I support the LAF and I watch the TdF everyday and I bike now too." As I've come closer, the light shed on ole LA has been a bit brighter. I won't stop being a fan, but if things head like it seems they may, I may not pull as hard for #6. He'll go from being a hero to just being a kick ass rider with a great story.

As for Jan, wouldn't it be "Mein Enemi der Lance Armstrong ist ein pansy und das 'Sheryl Crow' ist ein fraulein in meinen employmenten?"
I know. That was bad

Time to be together
They may not be an official couple yet Ė but songbird Sheryl Crow is spending Christmas with newly divorced hunk and champion cyclist Lance Armstrong. Sources say the hot twosome will be heading off for a tropical island to ďget to know each other better.Ē
