I Hope Ihis Is Just A Rumor...Otherwise...Wow

https://www.podiumcafe.com/2008/6/9/5...oonen-positive

"Het Laatste Nieuws is reporting that Boonen tested positive for cocaine in an out of competition control three days before the Tour of Belgium. According to the story, he was notified by mail last night. A close friend of Boonen's, Tom Vanoppen, was in December accused of possession by the Flemish doping police, and may have been dealing to Boonen.

HLN is calling this story breaking news, and I have yet to see it elsewhere. I eagerly await further confirmation, or better yet, a denial. Use at your own risk.

Update: According to the story, Boonen also lost his license last week for the second time in recent months after being caught speeding. He was allegedly drunk at the time."

I haven't seen this confirmed anywhere else yet.

I surely hope not. I'll wait until I see it reported on cyclingnews. Good gracious the sport is in a mess right now with sponsors pulling out, the best team not even in the Tour, etc.

Boonen's brush with the law does not stop there however. Just last week, he lost his drivers license for the second time in six weeks. On Tuesday night he was pulled over by the police travelling at 180-km/h in a 90km/h zone on the Mol ring road. He had a blood alcohol reading of 1.0.
Six weeks earlier he lost his license for 14 days for travelling 120km/h in a 70km/h zone. In 2006 Boonen was the face of the Belgian roads and traffic Authority, promoting safe driving.

It seems to me that there is far less negative implication for pro cycling when a star tests positive for what amounts to recreational drug use - cocaine - vs. drugs like EPO and HGH taken to enhance performance. The former is a relatively minor criminal violation and a personal problem perhaps, but it doesn't fall into the same category as cheating with drugs to win bike races.

Which does seem to be the major point of testing athletes for dope. Still, the fact that an elite world class cycling star like Boonen could risk everything - his health, life, career, reputation, etc. by snorting blow is hard to fathom. Oh well.

Drunk driving? Cocaine usage? Time for AA Tommy boy. They have that in Europe. botto will be your sponsor.

Not a performance enhancing drug? With enough blow I could get my weight down to like 130 lbs which would get my w/kg up to something minimally respectable...'course all my training would be done at 2 in the morning with an average HR of 198...

Didn't ancient Incas chew coca leaves for some pick-me-up while hiking through the Andes? Maybe it IS a performance enhancer.

Cocaine is forbidden within races, but as the control was taken three days before the start of the Tour of Belgium, where Boonen went on to win the final stage, he is likely to avoid a racing ban. Even though the Vlaamse Gemeeenschap will not issue a suspension, the UCI could impose a stop of up to two years."

This is nothing new.

"You have no idea what the Tour de France is. Do you know how we keep going? Look, this is cocaine, chloroform, too. And pills? You want to see pills? Here are three boxes - We run on dynamite." Henri Pélissier, after abandoning the 1924 Tour.

Well, you are both right And if he needs brain surgery (which appears he might) it would help for that too. All he needs now is a green house to go with his green jersey.

"Traditional medical uses of coca are foremost as a stimulant to overcome fatigue, hunger, and thirst. It is considered particularly effective against altitude sickness. It also is used as an anaesthetic to alleviate the pain of headache, rheumatism, wounds and sores, etc. Before stronger anaesthetics were available, it also was used for broken bones, childbirth, and during trephining operations on the skull.

I know some of you will ask so ............Trephening is surgery in which a hole is drilled or scraped into the skull, thus exposing the dura mater in order to treat health problems related to intracranial diseases."
