"Someone should chase him down!"

That was heard multiple times during yesterdays Webster Crit.

The best part was the response, "Go right ahead, chase him down, we're not stopping you!"

Also heard was "Man the pace is slow," followed by "Why don't you go to the front and hammer it. We'll see you go off the back in one lap!"

I smiled and thought of BikeForums.

And then the exchanges got nasty.

Not the least of which is that talking wastes energy.

If you want to cajole people into doing your bidding, you've got to be a little more subtle. "the pace is too slow will always get the comment that speaker should get up front and work.

"Someone should chase that down" the problem is the phrasing invites the response you do it.

However comments like there goes the race up the road, that guys really strong, stayed away at the ___ race, guess we'll be racing for second, etc. often will cause someone to reel in the attack.

Works amaziningly well the lower the categories

Hear no evil, speak no evil, and since I'm generally well OTB, see no evil. Wisecracks and useless chit-chat are all I offer.

My favourite, actually paraphrased by a team mate who came across me somewhere in the middle of the pack, only partly in jest:
'WTF Treefox, you've not been dropped yet? The pace must be even slower than it feels...'

I've used the phrase "oh ****, that guy's fast, how'd he get up there?" to good effect.

"Let it go. He'll die in the wind"

Say it when your team mate attacks.

Yeah. I had a guy tell me three times "Hey, those guys are teammates!" I guess he thought I was stupid, because the fourth time he said "They'll work together!" Well, duh.

On one of the few times I've attacked during a race, I overheard a guy (with whom I have raced with several times) say "He's not going anywhere."
I started laughing. He was right.

It's usually true nonetheless.
