Versus Tour commercial

The "make a brand new start" theme. Anybody else notice they changed the last rider from David Millar to Vinokourov? I wonder if Millar wigged out.

Clever concept, but they could have gone a lot farther back into the Tour's history than they did.

in spite of being called out by the anti-millar crowd, i have to say that the commercial was pretty much bs. they had him in his suanier duvall get up from last year. bogus. furthermore, he was the last person they had on there, adding emphasis to his presence in the commercial.

I'm not sure from a psychological/marketing standpoint the time is right for this commercial. We all know the tour and cycling have been plagued by doping over the years. I don't believe broadcasting this commercial brings any assurance that we are indeed in new territory with a fresh start. I probably need a couple seasons to regain confidence. For the most part, this commercial merely reminds me of the junk we've been experiencing in the very recent past (... so recent, that it really isn't the past... it's the present).

So... yeah, the commercial is well done, and yeah, I wish it were an accurate assertion that we're on a new path... but it will take more than a commercial to reduce my cynicism. Hell yeah, I'm wathcing the tour this year; but I feel like the commercial is attempting to play upon my naivety and wishful-thinking.

Instead, I'll watch this thing with a dose of healthy skepticism/realism.

Stupid.

But I like the Trek commercial with LA narrating. Very cool.

The only thing more annoying than Saab commercials are Saab cars.

Buy one. You'll see.

I was thinking what if they ended with Millar just waiting in the start house wearing Slipstream kit, head down, he looks up directly at the cam as it pans out. No tour footage of Slipstream though.

I think if you go back past Floyd w/o including Lance people concentrate on the fact that they skipped over Armstrong even though he never failed a test.

The longest we kept any of the three Saabs we owned? 50,000 miles. All three were essentially lemons. All purchased brand new. If Saab is still in business by 2015, it will be a complete friggin miracle. I'm starting to think that may be true of Chrysler too.

That's strange, we have an '88 9000 series with 410,000 kilometers on it, bought new. It's held up admirably.

Actually your experience is very strange. Saab reliability is exceptionally abysmal. Look it up.

But this will be academic, they'll be extinct before 2020. Count on it.

The commercial annoyed me before it even finished the first time. Now when it comes on, I lunge for the remote control's mute button. Like it's not bad enough to see the same few commercials over and over during the three weeks of the Tour - now you get to hear a commercial over and over during a single 30-second broadcast. However it beats the alternative of no commercial sponsors, and therefore no television coverage of the Tour.

I dont like those commercials, at all. The picking and choosing of the subjects is too subjective for my liking. Why no virenque? why no hamilton? why no basso? why no entire once squad? why no entire usps team? why no heras or rumsas? etc., etc., etc. Marketing types should just let the issue go and focus on promoting riders that are actually competing.

They picked individuals involved in TOUR DE FRANCE drug busts. Hamilton didn't test positive during the Tour. Nor did Bassso or the entire USPS team. I think Ullrich and Zabel were in because just about the entire Telekom team admitted to it in 96. Virenque never fessed up despite overwhelming evidence, but so he should be in as long as Ullrich is. That's the only discrepancy I see. Millar never had a Tour scandal, which may be why he was taken out.

Millar was the lone cyclist who actually stepped up a few years ago and said, "yup - you got me. I did it", took his suspension, and worked his way back. Find me another who has done that.

That's a powerful commercial, especially the removal of the yellow jersey from Floyd's arms. IMO, David Millar doesn't belong in that company.
