Ethics question #2.71828183: Distributing race winnings

If you win a race, how do you determine if/how much of the prize money goes to your teammates?

I'm relatively new to winning any decent prize money, but I had some help from the team. It's not much money.

I've been contributing race winnings to buy lunch/breakfast/dinner after the race. If not an option, keep a tank of gas for yourself and evenly distribute the rest.

A couple of years ago, I lead three of my then team mates to a 1,3 and 4th place finish (I think). I finished about 30th. They pooled some of their winnings together and paid my race fee. That was cool.

If you do your share, you get an even split. Meaning everyone, from your 50th place, first of five leadout man, to your race winner, get equal money.

If you feel like you didn't pull your weight, you opt out.

I got a triple from Wendys for helping my team mate's placing in the money. Not much cash in his placing but he acknowledged my support and thanked me by clogging my arteries.

Honest to god - I was going to put up an Ethics question yesterday with the same number. Pi is just too easy.

Consider it an investment.

If you didn't help, give your share to someone who you think did.

Next time, I will. I seriously only ever won one race before this season (back in 1992), and I only won $10 for that one, so I never thought it would be an issue. Now, in one race, I've taken home new Oakley Flak Jackets, a pair of tires, gift cards, and a check that should arrive this week. Totally unexpected.

The accepted way is you pool all of the team winnings and divide in equal shares amongst those that worked.

If you win and your teamates worked for you, I would suggest that you divide your share of the money equally among them and you keep the trophy. They will be much more likely to work for you in the future if you throw them all your money.

The money you win you will soon forget, but the trophy lasts a long time.

I've rarely won cash in a bike race. The times I've won LBS gift certs, I get a bunch of tubes and pass them out to anyone that was in the race. We don't have any kind of team policy in this regard.

Last Sun we went to a local crit with a plan and executed it perfectly for the win, ended up with 1st and 6th place with myself and another teammate toast from leading out last lap. Cashed out with 90.00 and headed straight to the mexican joint next to the course to enjoy many a cocktails and all you can eat superburritos! Twas a fine day

funny thing is the day before I worked my ass off in a 65 mile race with 4k of climbing placed 3rd and got a tshirt and 5bucks LoL WTF...
