Possible First race

As I have posted before I just had an appendectomy, but I would still like to race this fall. I went out on a hard 25 mile ride yesterday and my legs still felt really good. So I was wondering if it was possible to be ready to race by August second. And just to cover all circumstances, I am a junior but would like to race in Cat 5 due to the larger numbers in race, if I were to just to participate in the cat 5 event do I still need junior gearing? Thanks in advance. This forum has helped me a lot in progressing as a rider.

Only your doctor can tell you whether it's okay to race or not. But if you're riding, it's not much different than racing. Only thing is the increased risk of crashing.

Juniors have to use Junior gears no matter what race they do. If you did a Pro/1/2 race (i.e. you're a Cat 1 or 2 Junior) you still have to use Junior gears. Sucks for now but you'll appreciate it when you start riding with Seniors who can't pedal right. So in a Cat 5 race you have to use Junior gears.

hope this helps,
cdr

Alright that helps a lot. I have junior gearing on hand so that is not a big deal. I hope I get there and race.

Just to follow up on a few things that I am really excited about. I have gotten in contact with a guy who runs a cycling team. I emailed him and he said that if I could go to the Indiana State Road Race Championships we could talk, and he said he would give me some advice on training. he then said we could talk about getting involved in his junior team, as well as racing some with their cat 5s. I am stoked.
