I showed up to a race on my $380 windsor weelington 2.0, the cheapest performance bike gear they had (water bottles, shorts, jersey), no sunglasses, and my stock pedals with toe straps wearing my $40 pumas from nordstrom rack? And what if i won?

first off you are a troll.

I would initially give you more attention than my fellow cat 4's with a Cervelo SLC-SL with zipps, as maybe, just maybe you undestand that its more the engine than the bike.

But for the most part i really don't pay attention to what other guys are racing unless they ride like an idiot, then i judge them for stupidity and hope they don't crash me.

More power to you if you can trounce the field regardless of what you ride. I've been in plenty of races with guys on equipment like you describe, that I didn't even notice until I looked at the pictures later...

Pretty much what I say to everyone else:
Good ride. You doin' ___(fill in blank with race name)___ next weekend?

Though with that bike I might add something snarky like "I'd hate to see what you'd do to us with a better bike!"

No one should have issues with someone's gear as long as it's safe for everyone. That's all there is to it.

What would I say? "Nice race, you're proof that legs do the talking."

You'd blend in. Only the win would set you apart.

I wouldn't say a damn thing. I'd keep the hell away from you at first, because my anecdotal statistics definitely prove that riding next to you is much more likely to be problematic.

I would congratulate you and invite you on to my team. I might mention that the things you eschew are comfort items, that don't really make you faster, but they generally let you train harder/longer/more often.

I think the bigger issue here, is why you were shopping at nordstrom rack... ?

Considering that I've done that, I wouldn't care too much except that I raced and that I went as hard as I could, for as long as I could.

Though cycling in Puma Speed Cats ROCKS.

Wow, another hypothetical question implying that racers don't like people who don't have expensive bikes. How original.

Seriously. A $400 race bike can only deserve $10 Payless Kicks.

And I would make sure I'm in a different zip code before you get those nasty pleather things off your feet.

I used to ride with toe clips and Nike Pegasus running shoes. Fine for up to 20 miles but after that the lack of support made my arches hurt.

I did a race where a guy lined up on a Surly touring bike, front and back racks (though he did take the bags off) and one of those old fashioned looking headlamps.

He didn't win.

A woman rode in my wife's race with toe clips and won.

You wouldn't win though, everyone knows you need a carbon bike to win races.

You'd fit in with the guy in cut-off jean shorts, another guy in cut-off Dickies, another guy in a ratty t-shirt, and the guy that always pins his number on upside down.

I rode a race this season with a guy that was in rolled up cords and a polo shirt. He DNF'd, leaving me with the glorious DFL for the night.

If it was P/1/2 I would laugh my ass off.

For Cat 3 I would chuckle.

Otherwise I might be mildly amused.
