Giro di Lombardia 2008

Bettin's win in the fresh rainbow jersey and just after his brother's death was one of the most beautiful victories ever.

Then he wins again the next year, he owned this race.

Odd that he would retire before one more shot at this one.

You are right, the year he won after his brothers death was amazing. A man on a mission for sure. If you guys haven't seen it, I'm sure YouTube has it. Absolutely head and shoulders above everyone else in the field. He didn't he even have to attack, it was more like beat opponenets into submission with easy form.

I'll take Freire in a small group for the piss-off to Valverde.

agree, and by accounts that I've read, il grillo was feeling good at worlds, he just had the entire team of spanish flies on his wheel, which gave ballan the opportunity to go for the W.

Bettini is one of my favorites, I'm sorry he's hanging up his bike and wish he was doing lombardia one more time.

Right on the worlds/lombardia following his brothers death, beautiful racing.

I think Cunego likes the race as well. He won it in 04 and last year beating Ricco at the end...I bet that pisses him off a little...

I think the Garmin/Chipotle squad are going to be there this year....

has his form improved at all this year? He was having some bad luck at the tour, etc. Is Horner back to racing yet? I'd love to see him improve on last year's result.

2nd, Road Race World Championships

I think he is much better early or late in the season...just not in the middle.

Yeah, Cunego is definitely a favorite.
This isn't one that Ballan has done well in before, but obviously he'll be super motivated ;-)
My money's on Sammy Sanchez though.
Longshots never win this one.

Regarding Bettini not ending his career with Lombardia, he probably felt it more appropriate to end his career with his last racing being the World Championships with him in his country's colors, riding for Italy rather than wearing Quick Step colors and riding in Lombardia. He seemed very upset with how badly his contract negotiations/extension went with Quick Step. The disrespect and lack of appreciation he felt was displayed by his teams sponsors for his trememdous contributions over the years was the final straw.

I wouldn't be surprised to see him unretire over the winter and sign with Lampre or Liquigas for another year or 2.

I also saw an article where he considered the World Championships "his race."

i think its pretty lame that tour positives are effecting rebellins's lombardia... they should make that 8 day team penalty back dated too..

I love Rebellin's riding style too, but let's not assume that he's clean. Remember, they only retested samples from this year's TDF; Giro organizers declined to retest blood samples taken during their race. How many more samples would have turned up positive if they had?

While Lefevere may have made some disrespectful comments, Bettini himself is probably as much too blame for the bad negotiations. According to some (Belgian) press reports at the time, Bettini demanded a significant increase in salary or else he would go to another team.

The nerve! Who does he think he is? A back to back world champion, mutiple monument master, never been dope busted good guy with a positive public image huge fan base and commercial appeal and a classic nickname. Clearly he should have just shut up and taken what they offered him.

He is a 34 year old cyclist already on a very high salary. He demanded a significant increase for several years. I say it's Lefevere's good right to tell him to go join the other team. What's disrespectful about that?

Given that he didn't join the "other team", I suspect no one was willing to meet Bettini's demands.

Not that Lefevere cares, but Bettini's image is not hugely positive. He has a big fan base, I'll give you that.

Of course. If Paolo didn't really have any other offers then hinting that he would leave was not the smartest negotiating stance. He's famous for his cheeky moves but they don't work at the bargaining table as well as they do on la corsa.

Anyway, this thread is about the race on Saturday. How's the weather?
