Would you go?

Damnit - I f'd around too long and didn't go to sign up for the skill based state championship race and of course registration is full now. I was wondering if it'd be worth it to drive there and see if someone doesn't show and perhaps I could take their spot. Anyone ever tried something like this?

I'll bet there are people taking spots who can't make the reschedule. If you were racing Cat 3, you could have my spot. I reg'd and can't go with the reschedule. I bet there will be a LOT of no-shows.

If you can't race, it might be fun to find some teammates, report in, and head to the feed zone for them for handups...

Too bad you can't make it, especially with the season you've had. A state championship would be a nice feather in the cap.

Well I went, and not only did I race I got to race for free. A buddy of mine was registered for the race and, since he emailed me last night from Amsterdam, I figured he wasn't going to make the race. So I gave them his name and told them his spot was open, they had me fill out the registration form and just handed me a number and I was off - never asked me for any money.

I had a great great race up until the end. To cut the suspense I got caught up in a crash with less than 4 miles to go. I did hit some of the carnage - didn't go down but I did have to come to a complete stop, extricate the bike from the mess by BACKING UP, then clip in (on a hill - apparently needed a tutorial on how to use my pedals at this moment) and try to catch the main group by trying to bridge solo into a 15-20 mph headwind. (which didn't happen of course).

Its too bad because over the last 25 miles I was feeling fanstastic. I think I had an ear to ear grin going. I had no problem whatsoever covering any of the surges or attacks. I went off the front a few times but couldn't get anyone to go with me so I went back to the pack. With under 10 miles to go I realized that I was fresher and stronger than most of the people around me and was chomping at the bit. Then the wonderful sound of humanity and bikes hitting the tarmac - oh well, its part of racing. Bit of a dissapointment though. (there were two more wrecks before the finish too).

Also, early in the race Doggus rides up next to me and says howdy. He kicked ass - think he avoided the crashes and got himself a top 10.

It was a wonderful day to race - really glad I went. Bit windy but the temps were nice and the terrain more suited someone from Austin than anywhere else in Tx. I 'attacked' on hills simply because I was annoyed at going so slow...

I'm gettin good at spotting you Ravenmore! So you're one of those AT&T Brain and Spine guys.

I have a teammate who is leaving the team to race for GSTenzing. I told him that it'll be a hell of a lot easier to roll off the front with him if our jerseys no longer match. You and I could do the same! It's always easier to go with a different jersey.

If you happen to know the name of the guy in Yellow who was off the front during the first lap...I'd like to know who it was. There was some talk about him in the pack. I nearly shot myself in the foot trying to get him back.

Myself and two of my teammates got caught in that crash with 4 miles to go. I didn't get taken down but had to side-step my bike to the edge and around. I panicked when I saw the group flooring it up ahead. I barely made it back to them. Those two teammates were in the same position as you...they couldn't get out of the melee fast enough to get back on.

Two more crashes going up the final ascent to the line...gotta love crash 4s.

P.S. The guy that won from Texas A&M...he was busy yelling at people to get the hell out of his way on the final climb. It was amusing.

I didn't know that A&M guy won - I was marking him during most of the race. He looked pretty strong. Nice one yelling at people to move - lets see how well that works for him in the 3's.

Yeah, I'm one of the brainless spineless guys. Just got that skin suit I was wearing. Bad idea since it only allowed me 2 bottles for the entire race (thank Gawd Cyctomax works so well). That's a good idea about rolling off the front with a different jersey. If we do any more races together I'll keep that in mind. I learned early on conditions weren't good for small breaks. The wind was too much - I'm surprised some of those breaks lasted as long as they did.

The guy in yellow is Lynn McMahon from Houston. Rides for NWCC. As you saw, pretty strong!

Fun race. I made it until the last turn into town and my legs completely cramped up on me...I mean to the point where I could not walk when I got off the bike. Must find the correct electrolyte combination...I hear Tums works wonders (Ca, Mg), but also need to get my sodium levels up. I finished, but it hurt like hell. I think I may have even talked to you at one point Ravenmore - something along the lines of hard to get a rhythm with all the braking going on. Spent some time in the front, but never went with a breakaway assuming (correctly) it would never stick. Now...if there had been 5-6 riders as opposed to 2-3, I might have tried it.

Heh - yep, that was me. Wtf was up with that breaking? Drove me nuts. People finally smoothed out around lap 2 or so it seemed.

Yeah, I knew the onesie twosie breaks weren't going to succeed. I did keep and eye open though when 2 two man breaks were off the front. If they'd joined up that'd been a different story.

Try Cytomax for the cramps. I only had two bottles of fluids the entire race (and a couple of Gu's). I was cramping a little but nothing horrible. I also drank a bottle on the way to the race. I also ate one of those packages of Cliff Block's they gave us at registration and a small package of beef jerkey on the way to the race (loaded with sodium). I was able to finish and ride back to the car without any significant cramp issues.

I ride with the A&M guy that won the 4s. I was actually a bit shocked he won as hills are not his strong point. He's a strong rider no doubt though.

I'll have to bug him about the yelling.

lol - yeah. In the higher Cats that'll be an invitation to have the door shut on him I'd imagine. He rode a great race though. Like I said I was marking him and watching him throughout the race.

Yelling at the end indicates the pace isn't high enough, so it probably won't be a problem in the 3s.

Talked to the Cat 4 winner today. He said he was yelling at a teammate (A&M rider, but in a different kit) to get into better position. I think his teammate was helping him with a leadout.

Well, that makes more sense I guess. Lotta people have been talking about it the past couple days though - pretty funny.

Uffa and btw, I happened to see the results today. I got something like 35th. Its part of racing, but its frustrating considering I feel like I was riding better than anyone on the team that day. Oh well, another day...

On a side note - EDR - Paul finished right in front of me.

Yeah, I'm frustrated that the Cat 3 winner is the guy I pwned at the last Driveway. Great kid though. I'd just like a shot at him in a big race.
