Fuel to the fire?

What is going to keep you motivated this winter when it gets wet and cold (a relative term around here)?

For me my goal is Cat 3 by July 4th -- No real reason on the date, I'd just like to do a few 3 races before the end of the year.

What's got me going is:

1) Getting dropped on the only significant climb at the collegiate conferences
2) Being __this__ close to points in my last cat4 crit, only to have a bike laid down in front of me with 1/2 a lap to go - stitches and a compromised shoulder later, that was the end of my road racing for the year.

you?

Did you know anyone can be a cat3.
25 mass start finishes as a cat4 and voila.
I'm sure your college races will count as well.

Around here you have to finish with the pack in 20 races that have at least 50 riders. Go go domestique.

I am racing for the first time next season.

Having never raced, I don't have any tactical experience... I don't yet know how to race SMART. All I have is the ability to prepare, train and race HARD. Simply outwork and out-train the competition. Cold, wet, windy... whatever. Hard work and a desire to win are all I've got .

25 races is a lot when you're a married grad student. I'd just as soon be competitive and knock it out in 10 or so.

does this mean that you don't have any cat 3 upgrade points?

As would many people. The question is - do you have the ability to do it in 10 races?

I suffer through the winter in hopes that I can be more than just pack fodder next season.

It is finally not wet and hot as hell.

The only thing that I don't like about riding in north-central Florida in the late fall/winter is the relative lack of daylight. And the lack of any real climbing.

I don't really have anything to offer in terms of motivation for next season, because I know exactly where I want to start and what I want to focus on. But I want to add that if you're lucky enough to have some random rider from a higher category come up to you and say something like "you know, you're a great sprinter, but here's what you're doing wrong..." LISTEN to them. This was the best thing that happened to me all season, and it made a HUGE difference for me.

Motivation:
1 - to own the hell out of some collegiate races
2 - not to get dropped at the majority of the "real" pro-am crits i will race in 2009
3 - to develop my already massive guads to eyepopping proportions

1) Redemption from a worse than dog poop performance at the State TT last year.

2) Anticipation in reading about Waterrockets and EDR's victories here on BF in '09.

3) Gila.

To find 20 or 25 (whichever it is) mass start races with 50+ riders,
you'd have to do a ton of Cat 4 racing at significant races. At that point the USCF
should give you the upgrade based on Frequent Flyer Miles and Gross Entry
Fees and Risk to Life and Limb for crissake.

Not for nothing, but if you can't get ten top 10 placings in Cat 4 races, why would
you want to upgrade to Cat 3 in the first place?

Not that I'd ever want to upgrade based on attendance, but if you have a car, it's not that tough to find that amount of races in the North East.

here's my winter motivation:

https://www.rougeroubaix.com/

1st weekend in March. Historically I am fat and slow that weekend. Not in '09.

100 mile RR with long gravel sections, punctuated by steep climbs.

I entered two training series races this summer, and got my ass handed to me with extreme prejudice. I am terrified of that happening again, and that is what drives me.

Nothing but fear, that's all I need. And this lamp. The lamp, the matches, the paddle ball game, the remote, and fear. And that's all I need.

What's got me going are the endless ways to put myself or a teammate on the podium in every single race we enter. This team is deeeep

I hope I can do a few more races this year...
