Yesterday at the end of a long first week of training, following a month off, I did a hard group ride on a different bike than I had been using the rest of the week. The whole ride I thought the PM on this bike was reading low, because the effort felt much harder than the numbers I was seeing. But despite the fact that the 3s number always looked low when I checked, NP for the ride was high, right about where it should have been for the total perceived effort (and 30w higher than my previous rides this week). I think it was because this ride was more of a constant near-threshold pace, whereas my earlier solo rides I would ease up on the flats.
It reminded me of a ride last year, also at the end of a training block, where I was certain the PM was reading low, then went and compared previous times and AP on my home hill, and found the number was right in line.
tldr: moment-to-moment RPE can be deceiving, and it can be tempting to assume the PM is reading wrong when it doesn't match your expectations.

I agree with you on the last statement for sure. It had been over 2wks since I had ridden with power.
The numbers seemed high considering the speed I was going and the RPE seemed low. It was an odd ride, but then again I was working on less then 4hrs of sleep and had lots of crap smacking around in my mellon.
Either way I like the look of Riken, it seems more substantial than the S975 and I like the fact it uses a more readily available battery. The thing I find interesting is that they sent new magnets with the unit and said you should replace the current ones because the new ones are designed to work specifically with the Riken. Last time I check, a magnet was a magnet
Personally I'm using rare earth magnets stuck to the frame.

True, but the reed switches in the spider may be different. I'm using a stacked and glued set on mine.

I'm doing the same, no issues as of yet... Today's ride seemed more in tune power wise. The real test is when I get out there on a real cool wet day. That was the conditions that always caused the S975 to go wacky.

My riken was the wacky one. It's zero offset is never stable in the first 15-20 minutes (drops like 30 units, then is fine). My s975 was perfect! it's zero offset moved like 5 units total, and the slope never moved. I loved that thing. Unfortunately i broke it

I havent been able to figure this out but maybe you guys have some feedback?
For some reason when I hit the lap button and start my intervals, the avg power always seems higher than the normalized power(pedaling the whole time). I don't get why this happens, only happens during an interval where I'm pedaling the whole time, so avg will be say 250 and normalized will be like 243...wth?
If I am just tracking the full ride obviously normalized is higher, but it doesnt make sense, it should ALWAYS be higher I think...
DO i have a failboat garmin?

It has something to do with the rolling 30 second average to calculate normalized power. If you sprint hard during the first 5 seconds it can mess the np up.

Always wondered why the NP was low. Eventually if the interval is long enough it more or less avgPW = NP

Yeah, rolling 30 second average power for a duration less than 60 seconds is undefined. They should display "--" or just "AP" for the first 60 seconds, so that the first sample considered has a full 30 seconds of data to average.

What do you guys monitor on your bike computers? What should I be watching the most while training? Right now I am monitoring 3s power and 30s power on my normal screen and have another with averages, and another with misc PM stats like NP, TSS, L/R. Here's my training screen:
Speed
Time / Distance
HR / Cadence
Elevation / Grade
3s Power / 30s Power
The racing screen just has 3s Power / Cadence / HR / dist / time

Everyone is different. The most important values for me are interval time and interval average power. I use the old Saris little yellow computer, and it's an easy device to use for these two. If I'm riding base though, I use 10s power most of the time, going for an "on" target and not worrying about the average other than a couple spot checks during the ride.

Main screen -
3s Power
Speed
Heart Rate
Distance
kJ
Interval Screen
Power
3s-Power
Avg Power
NP Power
Lap Time
Heart Rate
Then I have a bunch of misc screens that look at avg power for the full ride, total ride time, elevation gain, etc.
In races I just have. Don't want to distract myself with power or some other BS that will hold me back.

Does anyone display TSS on their Garmin while riding? I've got a Garmin 500, and despite my FTP being set the same on that and Strava/Golden Cheetah, my Garmin always logs a higher TSS. I also noticed it climbing while I'm just coasting. Weird

My reading vision has gotten terrible in the last year or two. I go for as few numbers on the screen as possible.
Timed race: 3s power, elapsed time.
Distance race: 3s power, distance.
Training: 3s power, elapsed time, lap time.
JRA: time of day, temperature, compass heading.
I have another screen with elevation, mph, etc but I never look at it. I should just turn that screen off.

Yes, for recovery days and openers/form sprint prep days when I have to stay below a certain TSS.

Good lord. I mainly look at the screen to see if there are some numbers there, meaning I remembered to charge it. I look to see if there's anything weird also, like 3000w numbers, meaning my crank battery is dying. Other than that...
I look at my heart rate sometimes, usually if I'm not feeling good but the pace seems easy (i.e. a disturbance in the Force). In a race I might look at it 3-4 times on a bad day. On a good day I won't look.
I sometimes look at the power number (current power) but that might be once a race, and I don't look at the power for many races at a time.
I rely on the download to tell me what I did.

I'm a numbers nerd. I look at my power while training way too often. I think I've gotten better at setting a steady pace and knowing what I can maintain, but sometimes I think I should just throw the dang thing in my back pocket and ride by feel
