New course for Battenkill '09

It looks like the 2009 BKR course has been out for a month and half or so! http://tourofthebattenkill.com/

It looks super gnarly - 100KM/62 miles for amateurs, with 1800 or so fewer feet of climbing but many more miles of dirt roads. It looks like it's going to be absolutely beastly, especially in the middle of April. The short but steep climbs and treacherous roads should suit me, IF I can survive 60+ miles of abuse. It's really starting to hit me just how strong I'm going to have to be to do well in this race. It's longer and nastier than anything I've done, and I can't start my winter training in earnest until December 19th. It looks like I'll need to get some serious volume and distance from then into the end of February, then really start ramping up the intensity through March. I've been planning on gunning pretty hard for this one - I REALLY want to make the podium - but I've never done anything like this, so I'll have to be prepared to do much worse than that! In any case, it looks like a blast. Anyone else aiming for this one? Any thoughts?

Did you see the article about this on Velonews? Apparently the promoter was/is trying to make it a 2-day race. Maybe will be starting in 2010?

this is great news... less climbing and more dirt. great to hear.

I did the race last year as a 4 and would have podiumed, but a destroyed tire 8 miles from the finish line ended that possibility. I still finished top 1/3rd after riding a flat for 3 miles and getting a tube from a buddy... no help from the support vehicles.

that said, this is the only race I'm targeting for a win this season as a 3. As a 190 pound rolleur who love riding the rough stuff, I cant wait.

But you are spot on about a big energy day... drafting in the dirt isnt as effective as on the road.

My prep for BKR has begun, things i'm focusing on:

lots of SST (including lots of SST on packed dirt), 4 rides per month with KJ outputs of over 2500 KJ's (building to 3000+ rides)... boost FTP!

more to come...

I love BKR,

-L

Well, I'm not really the big roleur type. Actually, I'm a little 123 lb dude, but I've got a good jump - not a pure climber - and am comfortable on dirt. In theory, less climbing hurts my chances, but I'm figuring to do my damage on the nasty dirt climbs, and do my best to hide from the wind everywhere else. SST sounds good. FTP was a weak point for me last season, as was endurance, so once I get rolling I'll be doing a lot of long rides and lot of work aimed at boosting that FTP. No power meter, but I'll do my best. See you at the races!

BKR means a lot to me. I cant wait.

Where do all you guys that travel stay? I know Cambridge isn't exactly a bustling town. Hotels, motels, back seats of your cars?

See you there Pat! We need to ride before I head off to AZ!

There was no such thing as a pack last year after the first dirt climb.

Indeed. Try to make the split on Juniper Hill. From what I hear, this is NOT a race where you can sit at the back for the 1st 20 miles. The train leaves the station at mile 10, you need to be there to catch it. I'm not too concerned about making the Juniper Hill split, though - I'm light, I'm strong, I can climb on dirt and I'm planning to be at a high level of fitness. I'm worried about the 50 miles of pain that come AFTER Juniper Hill!

And like you, I'll be content with the top 1/3, but I REALLY want to podium in this race.

Okay, I lied - I HATE pack fodder finishes. Finishing outside the top 10 on a targeted race is disappointing for me. I want this thing.

new article on velonews. Looks like the UCI denied his appeal. However should still be an awesome race!
