First race...totally addicted

I had my first race today, it was a nice short time trial on a somewhat hilly route, 8.5 miles out and back. Not only was it my first race but it was my first time riding in rain, I'm still pumping off adrenaline. I finished on a road bike in 24:45, figure I could have brought that down a bit if it had been dry because I was shaky in the first mile because of the wet roads.

Hands down the best experience I've ever had. I placed first in the 18-30 public cat but that's only because there was one other guy lol, talk about an asterisks next to your name! If I had competed in cat 4/5 I would have come in second to last, either way I'm happy for my first time out.

OK so my race ended at 9:30 AM and it's now 8:10 PM and I'm still freaking amped beyond all recognition from this race.

hey, you race who shows. A win is a win. My first official race was an uphill tt in a stage race last year (conquer the canyons), in a special "beginner/first race" category. I got second by 2/100 of a second... I looked up my time in the cat 5 race and would have been about midfield.

First time riding in the rain.

Sweet mother of God.

Soon enough, you'll be leaning on dudes, railing corners over manhole covers, pain lines, and oil spots in pouring rain at 30+.

Yes, bike racing rocks. Welcome.

Hi fauxto nick and vladav,

Nice job on getting that first race under your belt. In fact, fauxto nick for your first TT, that's way too close to some of my times on that course.

Me, I was sitting in my friend's motorhome in the dirt parking lot talking about how we didn't want to get our clean TT bikes all dirty on the wet roads. Somehow, when you're in your 50s (age-wise) and you've already done 50+ races this year, riding a TT in cold and wet SoCal just didn't seem like fun.

Fortunately, Tom's Farm was on my way to Thanksgiving at my parents' place. I ended up sitting on the trainer a bit and then riding around a little after the roads dried. Really kind of lame on my part but at my age I'm allowed to be lame.

Phsss whatever I hope I'm crushing at 50 still. Man this guy who looked like he was in his 50's to early 60's dropped the HELL out of me yesterday, I was stoked for him.

SO many beautiful bikes yesterday, zomg.

Hehehe, I said "course" as opposed to "race"... it was last January... prerode the course (on my 22lb Trek2100 lol), was staged #8, noticed rear tire was flat in the staging area, had a seatpack with a tube but no pump/CO2, rode back to car on like 20psi, changed the tube, staged very last (which ended up being kinder on the ego), 15mph cross-head wind out, cross-tail back, managed 23:24. My goal was testing watts as opposed to ET.

Towards the last kilo I saw my 30second man getting closer, closer, didn't quite catch him. Cooling down back to the car I noticed he was 20-30 years older with sneakers, powerstrap pedals, equivalent bike; at least he had clip-on aerobars lol.

Anyways lots of fun! Glad you're hooked - wait till your first crit... better than crack

I didn't get passed so much on the way out but more on the way back, i was holding back still because of the rain. This one guy though passed me on the way there and to add insult to injury he sprayed like a 10 ft stream of water in my face as he passed me.

Awesome! My first race was also a TT, albeit a shorter one - it was "prologue style," no aero equipment allowed, all of 2.6 miles or so. It was sweet - I caught my 30-second guy (in a 2.6 mile TT, sheesh!) and got a top ten placing. If I hadn't completely muffed the first turnaround and known where the finish line actually was, I might have been a place or two better, but I have no complaints. It was a blast! Welcome to bike racing, the most fun you can have with your clothes on .
