First race of the season: whats your plan?

So, for most of us our first race(s) is(are) right around the corner and that leads to countless work hours dedicated to thinking about what we're gonna do.

This is my first opportunity to work with a teammate and I'm really excited about it. Because we don't have experience working for teammates, he and I are going to 1) mark each other near the front ; 2) control the pace for a few laps in last 1/3 of race; 3) spill guts in the last two to help him get on the podium. simple.

What's your plan?

I'm ignoring the training crits as races so far. In my first race, this saturday, I only hope to hang on as long as possible

lap the field. it's a circuit race with a 7 mile loop, so it shouldn't be that hard.

weather willing it'll be this coming sunday. It's a "training race" so it's "process driven" and results are irrelevant to me. I'm planning to race twice, use the 3/4 for a warmup and to give bitterken a wicked leadout for his first win in the state of MD. after I'll do the 123 and plan to get into a good fast break to really stretch out the legs and lungs for the first time in a while.

I always have some trust issues in the pack at the initial part of each season, so I like to use the 3/4 race to get space oriented, work on pack navigation, and play around, then use the 123 to stretch the legs and welcome them back to anaerobic hell.

The first race, go with every attack until one sticks. Then work as little as possible to stay with the break.

The next two are tough ones. Lots of climbing. So, I'll stay close to the front. Watch what may take place. Read the guys as best as I can and see who's hungry.

I'm still undecided if I'll race this Sunday or wait until 3/1 for my first race. This will be my first real race in the P12s so the first half I plan to suck wheel and see what I'm in for. If I'm feeling good, I might try to go with an attack or two late in the race.

Beat the snot out of the 1/2/3 field.

Then hit on their girlfriends, wives, and 20 year old daughters while they scrape their deflated egos off the tarmac.

I want to string out the field and see how many people I can pop off the back.

Or just survive. Never really know until it happens.

My season in a nutshell

Race 1 - Big turn-out. Race was just a training race, we moved around in the field, attacked a bit, had fun.

Race 2 - Five guys. Plan was to get myself or another teammate into the break. I got in the first break, but it folded shortly after. Then he got in the second break, myself and a few others blocked and the break stuck. Unfortunately he couldn't stay in the break.

Race 3 - Just down to two guys. Plan was for me to stay up front and keep on an eye on things to see if anything developed and cover, and then if nothing happened, I'd string out the field with 1.5 to go so our sprinter could have a field day. I got in a break 20 minutes into the race, but it fell apart when three guys fought over a prime. Our sprinter got 6th, only because someone pinched him right at the line.

Race 4 - Five guys in the team. Plan was for myself or either of two guys to get into the break. I got in the break of 12, was worked over by five tools who sat in, attacked a lot the last 3 miles out of frustration popping one of the tools, and got 9th.

Race 5 - Four guy team time trial. Plan was to ride fast. We got 3rd missing 2nd place by 3 seconds, not too bad considering two of us were just riding road bikes with clip-ons and one guy never did a TT before.

Race 6 - Eight guys in the field. Plan was for myself and two other guys to attack like crazy, have three other guys cover anything that we weren't in, and have two sprinters sitting in ready for the finish. Unfortunately one of our cover guys crashed out, and two of the guys weren't up for the challenge of attacking a field in a crit, but I got a prime, and our sprinters got 5th and 6th respectively.

This weekend is a 68 mile hilly RR mixed with the p/1/2's and us lowly 3's. I'd tell you my plans but prying eyes are on the web.

My first race is this Saturday. Its a 9 mile time trial on a multi use trail. Its also is the closest race to my home there will ever be to do, passing within 3/4 of a mile away.

Lets see what I do this year.

Chase down breaks, then do my best to string things out on the last lap.

Then get out of the way.

slim, you gonna be at the blackhawk farms for the first race or is there something earlier?

My plan is not to be lapped like last year.
