this question has no relevant answer other than it depends. I honestly have no idea for myself, but i'm a decent 3, and handle myself fairly well in sprints.

I've been crossing the line in first place at Cat 3 crits at around 32-35mph, but everyone behind me is going much faster at the line. Of course, 500m earlier, I was in the upper 30s.

This thread wont yield you a useful answer as sprint speeds are dependent on the course profile, distance of the race, and aggressiveness of the pack during the race. I can hit 1600 watts if I havent done anything all day (except for warming up) up but if I do a sprint at the end of a 60 mile race I may only see a max of 1100.
The only true measure of where you stand is to race.

Kensuf, my sprint is pathetic @ 31mph, I am a cat 3, so I would consider you a sprinter as your top speed is very impressive to someone like myself. Hell, I could very well have one of the worst sprints on this forum .

To the degree that the OP's question infers that winning sprints is all about top speed it is largely misguided. Top end sprint speed would matter if sprinters all lined up like 100 meter track runners and drag raced to the finish line. But they don't.
Much more important than your top end sprint speed, is how and when you use that speed, and how good of a "jump" you have.
Timing and positioning are the key to winning sprints, raw speed is less important.

P.S. 41.1 mph on a slight downhill finish, with a 10mph quartering headwind, no lead-out, at the end of a 35 mile road race. Masters 55+ racer.

Me: pushing 50 yrs old Cat 4, definitely more of a slow twitch person, can hit low-30s pretty easily with fresh legs. At the end of a long hard RR, shoot, even with a leadout I'd guess I'm lucky to hit mid-20s, but I wouldn't know as I am not looking at my computer.

Where's that video of pcad hitting 40mp by himself? Boonen can it 47mph without a leadout @1600 watts or so. Can't imagine what the kid that maxes out the meter @2000w can do.

I can sprint at 36+ during each of ten laps of Thursday sprint workouts, and I can pull around almost anyone at the line. But if some guy goes big at 400-500m out, I don't stand a chance. Obviously these are all guys around my ability level, not pro-1-2 guys.

out walking the earth
I can't remember the last time I sprinted. Last season I did a few group rides in February and got to wind it up in a crowd. Weather and life hasn't cooperated this year. With a week until the racing begins I wonder if I can find a sprint to bring with me next weekend.

I can lay down a fairly good sprint (>35-ish) but would actually need to finish with the main field to do something with it.
