sprint speed maters most when find yourself heading to the line with 3 or 4 other people right next / around you. lol

The guy that got me into racing was exactly the same as your example.
He was a cat4 who could outsprint the field by huge margins. They forced him to cat3 and he quit the sport within a year, as he couldn't make the finish.
Unbelievable top-end for a skinny dude. We'd stand on the sidelines and guess how many bike lengths he'd win by.
He really should have hit the track for some match sprints, but the closest velodrome at the time was 8 hours away.

He regularly beats Cat 2s and 3s in the sprint at this event. Fortunately for him it's only a 20 mile race.

In my youth in Chicago we called it "gapers block". You would get stuck in a horrible traffic jam on the freeway and it turns out that it was caused by people slowing down to look at the carnage on the other side of the median. Some people just have to look.
