Racing/training in Virginia Beach
Hey everyone!
I'm getting closer to the date!
I'm going to be heading down to VA beach during my spring break (1.5 weeks betwee march 6-23) and I want to train/race while I'm over there.
Can anyone give me any info on group rides in the area and any good races during that time period.
I'm a 4 and I'd love to ride with a group or a couple of people of similar ability level.
Thanks!

Check out Fat Frogs as your first choice. I have done races and group rides with them and it has always been positive. They always have rides going out from their shop in the mornings and various levels on Saturday. They are also hosting a race at Langley Speedway on April 08.

You can also check out Conti's bike and fitness. They have a shop in the same area at Fat Frogs on the other side of the WalMart.

Dude, you are going to VA Beach on Spring Break. You should be concentrating on cross training. Bowchicabowbow

I just spent about a month in VA Beach and rode a lot with the Tripower folks (and some women who are now on Vanderkitten VA Beach). Great bunch! The Tue/Thurs. morning ride loops from a cafe right at the beach, around to Conte's Hilltop store, and back. It's flat and very fast. Weekends they go down south into nice rural lowlands along the NC border.
I also rode a couple of times with the Fat Frog's group and I would characterize them as older and slower, for the most part.

My FTP is somewhere around 270ish, and I routinely get about 230 NP for 2 hour rides solo. I don't want to get over my head since I don't know the area well, but if I could hide in the pack and be okay, then I'd be okay with it.

LOL..I'm not sure what's scarier..the fact that you're asking for power data from training rides in another state...or the fact that I have it!
Looking back I see a bunch of ~200 watt average rides, including warmup and cooldown. Several rides with peak hour NPs of 270-300 watts. Don't have Cyclingpeaks here at work so I don't have more details.
Those were not "sitting in" rides, FWIW, and the weekday ride regroups every few miles. You'll be fine. Tell Laura and BJ I said hi.

Bring your TT bike too. There's a TT and Crit on 3/14-15 about 30 mins from VA Beach.
I'd post the link to Bikereg but their site bombed over the weekend and are finally getting races back up.
+1 on the Conte's Ride if you're looking for a fast ride. Plenty other optional rides in the area if you don't feel like hammering.

Day late and a dollar short as usual, but here you go:
You won't regret going with the A++ group from Fat Frogs. There are other strong guys in the area to ride with- Hilltop with the Tripower folks comes to mind- but the Fat Frogs ride is a good one to start with. The short loop takes just about an hour, but it's a fast hour if the racers are out (there are usually a few). Most often they'll go a bit longer, down to Creeds or the Pungo Ferry bridge (1.5 to 2 hours depending on where you start from), and occasionally they'll go out to Northwest River Park, which is around 2.5-3 hours or so, something like that, or up to four if they go the long way. The shorter loops will be pretty intense most days, except for Friday, which is family day, on which the average speed is held down to 22 or so. The longer loops will usually also be pretty solid. Have fun!
I have a house in Sandbridge, so the durations above may be slightly skewed since I ride from the house to meet the guys, do the ride, and then ride home. I tried to knock my back-and-forth time out of the numbers above. Unfortunately, I won't be there while you are, or I'd come out and ride with you.

Don't be!
I looked at the racing schedule, and I'll unfortunately be missing Snowball #2, which isn't a bad thing.
I'll be racing twice on saturday in princeton. Then drive to virginia on sunday. Train m-f, and then race at sleepy hole on the 14th. Train s-f and then head back to PA on friday evening. I'll race at in newark, NJ on saturday the 21st and then head back to school that sunday.
2 weeks of break, 4 races, and 10 hard training days. I'll take a day or two off when I get back, and then plainville/bethel the following weekend.
Life is good!
