TT Helmet/Visor Question

Hello all,

So I just got a LG visor for my Giro Advantage II, I'm looking to mount it up ala Garmin/Astana since I'm always looking into the top of my Oakleys on the TT bike. Does anyone have any advice on how to do this? I can't seem to find pictures that detail how the pros do it, I assume the just cut out a bit of slot system in the helmet so that they can switch between the clear and blue tints but I could very well be wrong. Anyone care to enlighten me?

From what I've been told it will cram right in between the padding and shell. I keep planning on doing the same thing but haven't ordered a visor yet.

A few of the posters on Slowtwitch have pics on there. IIRC, a guy named gralden did it with his Meteor and posted pics.

Good question. I have two of the visors in my garage. However, you could have a problem. I ordered the visors recently and ended up with the new version. They look a little smaller and have vents in them. All that being said, I'm really not sure how they are doing this. With the Advantage II, there is a foam liner attached directly to the shell. I did not see a way to slide it in there. I would almost think that you would have to cut into the foam to make a slot for the visor to slide into it. If you find something out please let me know. I'd really like to do this as well. If you can't make it work you may want to look into a pair of these http://sunglasses.go-optic.com/store...color=2&size=1 as they have not top frame and do not restrict your vision nearly as much.

I have the same problem with the top frame of my sunglasses cutting through the FOV. I'm gonna try these:

From the looks of it, you can just slide in the sides of the visor into the earpieces of the helmet. I have an '07 or '08 Giro and it's got no gap between the foam and shell on the brow of the helmet, but small gaps on the ears. Well, kinda. They're glued, but I'm certain you could jam something in there. It seems like it's tight enough that it would hold the visor in place without anything anchoring the top of it. Or maybe just score a small notch on the brow of the helmet for the visor to sit.

Why would a Garneau visor fit on a Giro helmet?

Because they ought to be able to work on some helmet? I have a Garneau helmet, and visor. It's hot as hell, fogs, and by some accounts is less aero than no visor. I've quit using the visor.

Fits great and works fine on my Garneau. My coach insists on the use of a visor.

I borrowed a helmet with a visor and ended up not using it. The visor had substandard optical quality, distorted my vision and gave me a headache

any followup on this? i was thinking of doing the same.

What accounts? (not being a smart***)

Don't recall where I saw that. If you want to pay for data, there's this link: http://www.springerlink.com/content/k004r03534n626p1/

which tested helmets with and without visors.

Thanks, I'm curious, but not that curious. It seems (to me at least) that I saw more riders using visors than in the past at the ToC so I figure they might be on to something.

But it's definitely less than 100%, which makes me think that some riders or teams have concluded that it's more aero to go without, or issues of comfort, heating, vision, fogging, outweigh whatever small aero advantage there may be.

It would be interesting to see if the riders that are not using visors also happen to have contracts with sunglasses manufactures, like Lance. But I'm way to lazy to do that.

I work at CU, so I'll see if I can get a copy of that book.

I got the Ryder glasses and they work really well w/ the Advantage II. They fit snug and give you a re clear field of view all the way up. I highly recommend you try a pair of these before you start cutting into your helmet.

Nate552 03-11-09 05:42 PM

Oakley Zeros work well too. I have a pair but they won't stay up on my nose.

I'd be interested in reading it. In my feeble mind a visor would provide a cleaner presentation to the wind as opposed to your forehead and glasses. The reason I'm thinking this way is I read an article where John Cobb was noting how on some riders, the "head down / tail up" position of a TT helmet was faster, but it was because it hid the vents from the wind. The vents caused turbulence. I would assume that your glasses and face cause more turbulence than a visor? Of course, usually when I try to comprehend aerodynamic the exact opposite is usually true.

Overhead projector sheets, scissors, electrical tape.

Voila! :)

That paper mentions that they measure w/ and w/o visor but I cannot find the actual data.
