Burned matches.
Tour de Kale timed event to the top of a 20% grade summit. This was a 135k event. Several break attempts and one huge burned match where two of us bridge to the main break, got within several yards and the guy I was working with sprinted across, leaving me for dead. Then back in the main field several of us tried to get a second break going before the summit finish. No one would let it go.
When I got to the climb I was more than pooped. The heat and humidity had a toll on me too. It was beyond painful to the top.
Got 7th in my age group. 1 more place better than last year with 25k added to the race and an added climb.

Did the Mystic Velo crit in Charlestown RI. Lost position after going grass surfing with 2 corners to go. Did a crappy sprint and finished 5th. 1 point. Total of 10 now. Halfway to the 4's. I hope I do better next weekend...
5 mins after starting the drive home, my car died. After some help from friends, I stashed the car at a garage. I was trying to figure out how to get home, and I just decided to do what any self respecting bike racer would do: ride. The car dying part is getting old... The engine just stopped going up a hill. Garage thinks it's the alternator. I might have to ride back 70 miles to pick it up next week. Fun fun.
Total for the day 90 miles. 70 mile ride home after a pretty draining crit.
Highlights of the ride home:
-Getting pulled over by a cop as I was standing on the side of the road eating a hamburger. The road happened to be a highway. ooops...
-Missing an appointment with a friend : (
-Running over a sewer grate and pinch flatting the rear. Lucky lucky lucky. Only had 1 tube, and no damage to the rim.
Longer race report and ride report will be posted on the blog.

race report: velodrome open races: all cats mixed.
race #1. 30 riders, points miss-n-out (devil takes the last man) every 2 laps. Made it more than half way and gave up. result: dnf.
race #2. 15 lap scratch race. 10th position on bell lap. Jumped up to 3rd position and lost it by a bike length to the state champion sprinter.. result: 4th.
race #3. unknown distance. pace was fierce. not enough matches left to push to the front on the bell lap. result: not last, but somewhere near the back.

every now and then a flat 3 corner, 1k crit will be far more technical than you could have anticipated. Turn two: tight corner from 2 lane street into the east bound side of a residential parkway -- one lane, tight, maybe 10-12 feet wide. We took the corner 2-3 abreast with few problems. Then between turn 2 and 3 (<75m later) a nice little chicane that narrowed the field to 1-2 abreast, followed immediately (<75m) by turn 3 and about 200m jog left to the finish with another 200m past that to the first turn--this nice stretch of road was with the wind. The was going to be a really fast race.
To place, you would need to be in the top 10 going into turn 2 and gun it after turn 3 (~300m to finish). In the last lap in the 4s race I got pinched in turn 2 and was forced to grab the breaks followed by bad placement trying to move up before turn 3 and a frustrating sprint for a 14 place finish. I got a ride from two "kids" (21-22) and they were nice enough to allow me to stick around for the old guys race since I finished the 4s with so much frustration. In the masters 4/5, I did much better burning a match to be 8th wheel into turn 2, finally got the fast land through turn 3 and sprinted for 2nd. I took 2nd place by about 6-8 inches. I kinda threw the bike, though I had the place I didn't do the throw right. I'll be working on it.
do masters results count toward upgrading 4-3?

Did the geezers Cat 5 at Mystic Velo yesterday. Cool course...not my style...but cool still..been fishing down that way a lot, but never realized they had a bike specific track in Charlestown. Short race...only 17 laps...led the first lap at a leisurely pace, after which a guy rolls up beside me and says, "Wanna go?" One lap later he takes off, and I bridge up to him..break established...3 guys join us. We stay away for the rest of the race. Sprinting is my weak point, so i figured I'd take a shot with 1K to go or so...turns out the guy who started the break had the same idea...not enough juice, and ended up last in the break..5th...not too shabby for third race of the year
RTC, I guess I must have watched a bit of your race, right after mine, but had to get back to coach some soccer for lunch time...

I'm not strong enough yet, but I just can't sit in. I absolutely hate sitting in.
That being said; Masters 35+ State Games Crit. Early on someone attacks. A real strong cat1 guy and stays out the whole race. I take off after him and start picking off seconds and get to within 12-13 and start falling off. Strong head wind on the front stretch pegged me. The field was closing too. I was out solo for 4-5 laps.
Pissed me off and I just said F-it. Second time in two days my attempt fails.

Raced this weekend, Saturday Crit 7th
Sunday TT 4th
I was traveling ALL week and was scheduled to be home by 3:00pm on Friday. Did not land until 11:00pm. Ate at Papadeux in the Houston Airport, my system revolted at 3:00 am Saturday moring, Up ever hour to make a trip to the bathroom. Get to the race, warm-up one more trip to the Porta John race starts.
I'm sitting exactly where I need to be, gal jumps a the 180 turn, try to get on her wheel, start throwing up every time I try to go really hard... Hang on for 7th... finish the race.. then I really throw-up.
Home try to get rehydrated, wake up at 5:30 to head to the TT, our team is promoting the race.. so I have to help at registration.
Warm-up fight nasty cross winds.. but managed to take 8 minutes off last year's time.. just wondering how fast I could have gone if I had not been sick

A quick HousatonicHillzz race report:
cat 3/4
it was tough.
HAHA! not that short!
It was 54 of the hilliest miles I’ve ever done in my life and I loved every minute of it (crazy talk, keeping in mind my 194 lb. *** aint the best climber ever...)!!
Highlights:
-Racing with Matty and Aaron, teammates at last!!
-Riding solo off the front for miles 13-18.
-Getting dropped off the lead group something like 30 times and catching back on all but the final instance of droppage.
-Finishing the race with a solid 20 minute solo TT, trying to chase down the lead group... finishe 40-70" off the leaders, I figure
-Getting the best workout of the season
-Subway Restaurant
-A beautiful course and great race organization, very PRO
-Nice weather!! Made nicer by expectations of torrents
-Tons of screaming descents
I’m sure there were other highlights, but that’s all for now.
I’ll be back next year!!

Lake county 1-2-3 RR- 80 mi in 100* temps. Way the hell too hot, but we finished.
I didn't stick around to see where I placed, but based on the number of people that came in via the broom wagons it shouldn't be too bad. I'd estimate 2/3 of the 3's dropped out. The first 60 miles weren't bad at all, everyone stayed in the 24-26 range so you could move around and drop back to the cars for water, but then it picked up to 33 and stayed there which shot that plan to hell. I'm happy overall.

The course was excellent. Beautiful, and yeah, the race was very well run.
race report? late break didn't stick, followed an acceleration around that final corner, sprinted too early, ate wind, finished just off the podium. Dang.

Today: Cargas Criterium and Spinners
- 9th out of 40 (4/5 men)
Got up front for the first couple laps and got on the end of attempted break. After the break never went any were decided to slip back and stay on the wheel of a BCC rider waiting to see what happened. Couple others tried to make attacks but never got far and we caught them after a lap or sooner. Last turned I position myself a little more back then I would have liked and ended up behind some guy who just sat up after the last turn on the bottom of the hill. Dodged him and made my sprint, passed a good 10+ people on the sprint but just was to far back before the last turn to make the top 5.
Also had to protest the results cause positions 4/7/9 were missing from the results, and my number was not listed. Checked the camera with the socer and he found my position which was behind another ride in the camera view. Made the corrections and I started the 2+ hour trip home. Fairly happy seeing how I crashed yesterday.

Two of my friends dropped out from the heat, they both told me how epic it was. One friend (and former teammate) won it.
Me? I washed and played with the dogs. I'll bet I suffered less.

Decided to double up today.
Cargas Criterium 3/4 - This was my first 3/4 race so I was a bit nervous. It was definitely faster than I was used to, but I was able to sit in just fine. There was an 11 man break that went early and stuck. I think they had almost 2 minutes on the pack at the finish. I managed a pack finish for 28th. I was pleased.
Cargas Criterium 4/5 - Decided I would have some fun and try and speed up the race a bit. Went off the front at the start and spent the first 3 laps in a solo break before getting caught. Went off the front again on a prime lap with another guy, but he nipped me at the line. I was waaaay too spent to try anything at the finish. I guess I finished maybe 15th-20th. I didn't wait around for the results.
J.Lockdown - what was your number in the 4/5 race?
