The carnage this weekend was terrible. I feel so bad for the injured racers and the loss of a fellow racer. This is very tough to take. My condolences to his family and friends.

Condolences to Markus' family, too horrible for words.
Also, sending good wishes to Grumpy and CDR, it's difficult to bear witness to that sort of stuff. Hang in there gentlemen.

The team FB page has confirmed the bad news. I feel so sick about this. I was maybe ten feet away when the crash started and I managed to slide around to the right of the turmoil. I feel so bad for his family. I also feel for CDR, who really cares about all of "his" racers--that is, everyone who pins on a Bethel number.

Ex - Heal up and take that Vitamin D!
Back from the Fayetteville Stage Race. Sat RR - 46 miles, goal was to stay safe. Finished 6th. Sat TT- New course and I sucked it up. Bad road surface, windy (15-20 mph), and flattish roads don't work out too well for little guys. 14th. Very disappointed. Oh well. Sun RR- 49 miles. Goal was to help a teammate maintain or improve his top 10 GC place. Very windy day destroyed our field, only 20 or so survived to the end. 5th place (3rd in field sprint) moved me up to 10th on GC and my teammate moved up to 6th. Fun weekend.

I got to know Markus because he would always park near us at Bethel. Yesterday, Markus parked his car next to my friend Roger and me. After the 4's, we did our usual post race recap at the car. We parted ways after Markus told us he was going to do the 3/4's. Crap...who knew this would happen?! He was a really nice guy.

Horrible run of news. Last weekend we lost someone locally to an 'inattentive' driver, then all these bad crashes; it hits you hard. My best to everyone.

I spoke with the Pawling crew many times in the last 22 hours. Although no one told me exactly what happened throughout the evening, the questions the various "authorities" (nurses, police officers, and things I saw on FB) asked me made it clear to me that this would end in the worst way.
I wanted to let Pawling take the lead because Markus was their rider, their friend. I shared with friends for support, guidance, and just because. I asked those I shared with to keep the information private until it was public, and I appreciate the incredible discreteness they exhibited.
I spent a very long evening and night, visiting the ER, then the police department, then the ICU, with probably dozens of emails, texts, messages, and calls between each stop. I operated on pure instinct, unable to think very coherently and driving like a divining rod was steering the car. I was fortunate enough to be able to see Markus in the ICU late last night, to speak with people that knew him, and to leave him in private with family.
The Missus said she can count on one hand the number of times I've broken down in the 10+ years we've known each other, and all of them have been in private. This was a public time.

this is awful. condolences to all involved...never even heard of the guy, but he was a fellow cyclist, so it still feels like it hits close to home.

And you of course know I'm on that list of people to call if you need help. I've always been impressed by the professional way you put on the races, and your handling of the worst possible crisis just confirms my high opinion.
