Weekend of 4ths.
C-130 Hercules TT Saturday - 22 miles
Start is out the back of the aircraft which is cool. Went about as well as I can in a TT. Just under 48 mins. Guy that won went by me with about 1.5km to go. He started 3 mins behind me. That's not a gap i'm going to make up any time soon. 4th. Teammate 4th in his cat.
Bunny Hop Crit - flat 3 turns, 40 mins
Sat in the whole race as planned. Leadout didn't quite come together as planned. 4th.

It's especially confusing because our bibs are like exactly the same
but we're a darker blue.
I'm not a Swamis club member.

I bailed out of the 3's…had a bad feeling, glad I didn't stay…the 3/4 was a train wreck. i got tossed into the hay bails at about 28mph and some how, by the grace of God stayed up…guess it pays to have motorcycle racing experience sometimes eh?

My teammate and I decided at the last minute to bail on the 3's at Dana today…we had both pre-regged also, it wouldn't be as big of deal if I didn't have to go to work on monday. Seriously thinking about focusing only on the Masters races.

You think Masters is going to be easier than Cat3?

Blue Hills Classic Cat 5
Great Course, fun race. Basically 7 mile laps, with the main feature being a nearly 1mi power climb 3-4% to the finish. Cat. 5 did 3 laps.
First lap pretty much paraded around at a slow pace until the base of the climb. 2 people took a flier, got a bit of wiggle room, and about 1/3 of the way up the climb the pack exploded. Did my best to hop wheels and not get dropped. At the top, there was a lead group of 6-7 riders, then there were about 8 of us in a second group 200m back, and then the other 30+ members of the race strung out behind.
We formed a nice paceline, but within 1 mi had dropped 5 members off and hadn't made up any time. The remaining 3 of us went inside-out to catch up, but after another few miles were just losing time. We decided to throttle back and try to just stay away from the peloton (making us break away #2, instead of chase group #1). We ended up doing a hell of a 3-man TTT for about 14 miles to finish well ahead of the main group (we caught one dropped ride from the lead group).
Had a lot of fun, worked hard, and set some new power records (my hour NP was way higher than I thought possible).

Janders, sounds like a whole heck of a lot more interesting cat5 race than any I did! Good job working together, even if you didn't catch the break.

It's much faster but typically safer. Crash knows that.
There is also a somewhat predictable pattern to the Masters races as the big teams vie to setup the right break and then settle down to protect it. Honestly just sitting in is much easier than a Cat 3 race because the races are much smoother with less variation in the speeds. Getting a top 10 in Masters is a different story. That is much more difficult than the 3s.

Race report, short version:
Cat 3 - attacked a couple laps in, did the fastest lap of the race, stayed out for 2 laps (i.e. 1.9 laps longer than I should have), got caught/dropped, then time trialed for 20 minutes until I got lapped.
Fast lap of the race got me a beer. Yay!
M45 - Had a blast, moved up to the front at the bell, cramp made me sit up about 100m from the last turn. I wish I hadn't TT'ed for 20 minutes in the 3s, I felt absolutely great at 5 to go.

Thanks for the shout-out CDR. I wouldn't have given you much of a leadout but I would have kept you on the front for most of the last lap. I'm glad you enjoyed the M45+. Please consider doing more of them. By the numbers, my M55+ race was harder. M55+ VI 0.99, M45+ VI 0.89. But the M45+ felt much, much harder. I had two guys to cover and it seemed like one of them was in every attack. Or I was hallucinating.
