Great to be at the driveway again...was late to start of 3/4, but they let me jump in...1st thing I see is cbip off the front with 2 others on pursuit...they give me the go ahead to jump in...I power it up and get right behind cbip....then he slows and looks for someone to take it up...sorry, not me, I just started and needEd to get acclimated...cut ahead a bit, race pace was fine, no issues at all -- that was a new sensation for me here...

with 3 or 4 to go, things slow tremendously coming up the hill...I was thinking of letting it rip then, but, thought it was too early...2 laps to go there was a surge (for a prime)...I let it go...didn't lose contact, but hung back figuring it would all come back...well, when we came around w/ one to go, those up front were still flying, advanced a bit down the hill, but still back a bit...advanced a bit coming up and hit it hard
a fair bit before the turns...darn, miscalculated, front group still strong...powered it in and sprinted for pride and 20-25th...first time in a long time I can point to a tactical blunder, strength and energy were fine...shame on me for not being aggressive...should have attacked when I saw the lull with 3-4 to go...not saying I would have stayed away, but, I bet it would have changed the dynamics and maybe helped a teammate...still, fun fun time!!! cbip says edr was in...I'll meet ya someday

Showed up right as my field was going off, last MTB race of the season.

Race officials/registration told me I could "race" anyways, after a 1hr 45min drive from hell. So, I strapped up, rolled over to the S/F, and waited for the field to come through again.

They were rolling ~15min laps, and I waited for what I imagined was the entire Cat1 field to come through for the end of their first lap. As soon as they were past me, I hopped on, and started out, 1 lap down.

Ended up taking that lap back on half of my field. Which is pretty sweet, but unfortunately, it didn't count for anything. Had terrible tires for the course, and was in danger of washing out in a LOT of the loose turns (brand new course, with no rain to pack it down after construction).

I can't wait for February.

another broken spoke + borrowed rear wheel with junior gears = new appreciation for juniors who race with seniors/masters.

did a 4 man TTT today.

last minute decision.

2 of us were on regular bikes, no aero bars, no aero helmet, not even a skinsuit.

no gloves and shoe covers were my nod to aerodynamics.

fortunately the one guy with all the gear is in flying form.

unfortunately we ended up with steak knives.

Hi,

After several years of trying, I finally managed to get under 22 minutes at one of our local TT courses. Official time was 21:34 for 8.5 miles of rolling hills (out and back). Tom's Farm course for the SoCal folks. Ended up 2nd (out of 6) in Masters 50+. None of the guys that usually beat me were there so someone new beat me. Got a ribbon.

Raced Portsmouth Crit Yesterday in N.H., Cat 4...

primarily because I paid for it. I've been dealing with an extremely sore/tight hamstring the last few weeks, so I figured I'd take it as a C/Training Race. I've hardly ridden at all, so I had no idea how the body would react. I didn't fully decide to race until yesterday morning, talk about being on the fence.

My only goal was to stay near the front and out of trouble. The only close call was when some guy blew a tube mid-corner turn 3. A few guys over-reacted changing their line too aggresively. This forced me to lock-up, which caused my rear wheel to step out sideways. Quickly getting off the brake corrected the slide and I was back in action. No harm...no fowl.

The results say we shed 1/3 of the starters, assuming we had a full field of 60.

41 finishers listed, I TT to 25th with the main pack just making sure I didn't get swamped by those racing for 23rd.

All in all it was great day; the banners, barriers, the crowed and Cow-Bells really gave it a Pro feel. After the race I had beers, soup and sandwich with a friend and his family at the Portsmouth Brewing Company. An excellent day, an excellent day for racing...until next season!

Raleigh Centennial Campus Crit Series (where Red Hat is HQ'd). B race. Prime on 3 to go. I got confused and failed. Prime on 3 to go? That's like a trick question on a test.

I worked hard chasing down breaks, pulling too much OTF, solo break for a lap or so. This was a good race for me because my RPE was recalibrated. Might be my last crit for 2009. 14 crits/RR this year. Next year I plan on doubling that number.

Big thanks to Todd B for putting on the Centennial Campus Crit Series. Looking forward to the 2010 series.

Pretty much done road racing for the year. Let myself get talked into trying cross, and had my first race this past Sunday.

I had a blast! Didn't crash. Passed more people than passed me. Looks like I found a fun sport to tide me over until the road season starts again.

First P1/2 RR - WOW!

Henleyville RR

What a pleasure to race with some very strong guys! Had a blast and planned to race conservatively.

Very strong break got away 5 miles in that was well represented and strong. Thought that was it...until one of the guys in the break got a flat (AV Rand Miller) and received another wheel from a team-mate in the main field. The order then went out to the 4 or so AV guys to catch the break and wheeeeeeeeee....hold on man cuz the pace took off.

Props to my experienced team-mate that took the time to explain what was happening because I was clueless!

Held on for dear life and made it to the end after running down the break - a counter attack went immediate before settling down just a notch.

Nearer the end 8 of the stronger guys took off in different moves and attacks and were strewn ahead of us. I didn’t have the legs to head out solo and wasn’t fast enough to catch a ride off the front.

I headed to the line with the group...wait for it...wait for it. My left side got jammed up with riders overtaking me but could not keep going because of additional wheels so I immediately looked to the right.

Saw a guy getting ready to jump (kind of like a cat before a pounce) and I jumped on! Got a nice ride to the front from about 6-8th spot back and when my ride faltered a bit I remembered not to (Winters RR). I hammered to the line with 200 meters to go and won the field sprint for 9th!!!

Kazaaaaa! That was fun Pleasure racing with Jrennie who along with his team-mate put on a freaking clinic for only being 2 guys!! Both finished ahead of me. Also met Mr. Racer X and enjoyed the post race banter for a bit. Thanks guys. Just realizing how much more there is to learn!

A nasty cold floored me the following day!! And that folks is the end of my '09 Season

I will never do this again... maybe. Bike leg of a IM distance tri-relay (Chesapeake Man):

Code:
 IM Distance:
	Duration: 4:32:10
	Work: 4363 kJ
	TSS: 261 (intensity factor 0.758)
	Norm Power:	273
	VI: 1.02
	Distance: 179.369 km
		Min	Max	Avg
	Power: 0	510	267 watts
	Cadence: 29	143	90 rpm
	Speed: 14.5	52.4	39.6 kph
We were ~20th coming off the swim (1 hr 8 min). I was the first bike in to T2. I had to drive our swimmer back to DC so we "left a man behind" to finish off the marathon.

DAMN! I was 0.4 kph too slow to do 4½ back to back sub 1 hr 40km TT's.

I raced my MTB. I crashed a lot, but I had fun, and I didn't come in last in either the XC or the short track.

I didn't know it was possible, but I think I'm actually worse at MTB than road racing.

Lol.

I raced cross on weds and came 9th of 18. I had missed my start time by 3 mins though, so that was pretty hilarious.

This weds I plan on going back and lining up near the front. I know how to play the course much better now.

At least it's not very hard to see where I hit the proverbial wall today.

First 3 hours were over 40kph. Hour 3... welll.. not so much.
