I'd wager those two issues are less immaterial if you'd lost your career, livelihood, or (physical or financial) well-being due to them. Or you know, just caring about that pesky "equality" principle.

They may not be salient to your main point in re the system, but an odd choice of issues to casually dismiss, imo.

immaterial is the wrong word. My point was that the two parties are arguing over them - to the point that both refuse to act on the issue, yet they basically agree upon the same thing. They are refusing to move forward because of spite.

By the way MCD stock (McDonald's) has been very good to me lately. Don't even get me going about the APPL. The only thing that will derail Apple stock is WWIII or Steve Job's untimely death, whichever comes first.

I believe this myself, and have been voting 3rd paty for years. The problem is, the two big parties have most convinced that a vote for a third party is a thrown away vote, and are getting laws changed to make it harder for the 3rd party candidates to even get into debates. And when there is a decent 3rd party candidate, they do whatever they can to make him look like a nut, like the democrats did to Nader.

Hell, if they're the slightest bit off message, they even get marginalized in their own party (see Kucinich and Paul).

I don't have kids, and I don't plan to have any. But I fear for my niece and nephews futures.

For a long time I thought the same thing. I told myself that my parents probably sat around poker table on Friday nights (thats what my parents did on Friday nights..had poker parties with the neighbors) and said "I fear for our children's future". I mean it was the 60's and we had MAD and the Vietnam War and then Watergate and the energy crisis. But now it's more than just a bad economy or a war or a corrupt politician. I believe that global climate change is a real thing. We are doing nothing about it. We are doing nothing about population growth. We are doing nothing about seriously finding alternative energy sources. We spend more time making sure Jerry and Jim can't get married than we do about making sure they can see a doctor if they get sick or making sure a child doesn't go hungry and get a decent education. We give the same weight to the argument that humans and dinosaurs co-existed as we do string theory.

Even with all the ****e that scared my parent I really think they thought I'd live a better life than they did...I really don't think that for my kids.

It's not the Republicans. It's not the Democrats. It's the whole system.

Well, OK, maybe this one is more on the Democrats (and I am one). But regardless, our governments no longer function.

I also don't see much chance of that happening. If there were a viable 3rd party they would simply use their power to join with the Rs or Ds depending on who was going to give them the better deal. I'm not sure that would change much...

Don't forget that within each party (R and D) there are multiple factions vying to control the party. Those changes push the parties left/right/center based on the current mood of the population.

I'm a little more optimistic than most. The political environment doesn't look pretty right now but overall the system is works. One group gets power temporarily to try their ideas. The public does/does not like it. A different group gets voted in to try again. Along the way compromises are made. That's about as efficient as representative government can get.

My parents were scared for my future in the 60s & 70s. The U.S. has survived regardless of their fears. I'm sure it will for my kids.

there's no left/right/center in the US, it's all right.

fine, "more material"?. I don't work in a court, so the concept of something being material doesn't jump to the front of my brain. I don't even feel bad about this one.

Actually, I'm not even sure I'd step back from the phrasing. There is a substantive difference in something being "less immaterial" and something being "material", and mirroring the original phrasing conveys the point with less parsing.

Population Growth is actually trending downward: http://www.google.com/publicdata?ds=...+growth+trends

Unfortunately, it's trending downward faster among the educated/intelligent.

We had to give up watching it on Sunday nights, too much 'retrieving'... I guess the servers get unhappy under load.

But it's totally down now?? What happened? Did you watch too many movies? =]

dunno. it's all over twitter. I don't actually use twitter, but google does. There's a bunch of people with problems. I tried calling, and it wouldn't even put me on hold because they had too high of call volume, they just tell you to call back later.

I've read somewhere that the population of the entire world could comfortably live in Texas with something like 1000 sq. ft of housing for each person. Not a real argument but interesting...

Imagine the fields at the local cat 3 race if that happened It's not that there are stronger riders in Texas...It's just that there are so much MORE of them...

Yeah I don't know all the political science, but whatever it means when you have no choice > that's what we have.
