Took mini me to the BMX track Sat AM. His first time there to actually ride it. At the top of the start ramp he thought it was too steep. Goes half way down and tries to coast up the first jump. Fail. Falls to the side. Comes back to the start, goes up a little higher and pedals once or twice. Just enough to get to the top of the first jump and over. Then he makes it around the course with one minor off. Comes back grinning from ear to ear and proceeds to head straight back out.

A young guy shows up and proceeds to tear it up. Only him and mini me on the track. The guy gives my son some pointers to which he actually listens. Then the guy tells me he's 21 and was once ranked number 5 in the country. Two friends rode in the Olympics, another friend is a paid pro, and another girl he rode with was in the worlds. Things didn't work out for him. Injuries, loss of focus, bad decisions etc. Kind of sad to hear a 21 year old kid fatalistic about what could have been. Stay focused kids. Don't do stupid things, mmmkay?

While talking to the guy mini me continues to pound out laps. His front wheel catches air unexpectedly and at an angle to the track. He wipes fairly hard. Gets back up and rides back a few jumps to where he can get speed to go over the same jump again. That was huge for him. Getting up and trying it again without a prompt.

Oh, if you had been there you would have seen an odd site. My wife pushing our three year old daughter on a tricycle with a handle on the back around the entire course. Running down the jumps, struggling up them and jogging the flats. My daughter had the biggest grin on her face.

I think they're hooked.

The big chase group (Cancellara, Freire, etc) is barely a minute back. I would not count them out... Freire a good bet. Cancellara always a good bet.

And Evans REALLY doen't want to pull Gilbert up to the front group.

There lie dragons.

I was 50/50 if they split the group too early. I keep flashing back to the Monty Python "Nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition" sketch.

If Freire gets towed up there, after the other names have been fighting it out with knives - his odds start looking reeeaaaally good.
