Categories; #s vs letters

I was researching lettered categories, and found a thread on racing categories; letters vs numbers, but I'm still a little confused.

The crit I'm looking at says it's only offered to categories A and B. If I've never raced before, I can't do this crit, correct? Or do these letters not apply to me, because I'm not racing for a college team (as explained in that thread)?

Thanks for any clarification guys.

USAC categorizes their permitted events with a letter code. This is a different animal than your race category. An 'A' event is generally restricted to pro/1/2 and an 'E' event is more along the amateur schmuck lines. I'll see if I can dig up a reference.

Yes races are permitted based on categories, but there's another possibility also: Local promoters often use letters to designate "self seeded" categories. You get to chose what race you want to do. Usually, but not always, these are smaller training races. For example they could do it like this:

A Race: Cat 123 (suggested)
B Race: Cat 4/5 (suggested)
C Race: Cat 4/5, Masters, Women (suggested)

You need a USAC license to race, but you can race in any of the groups you want no matter what your numberic Cat.

Edit: I think they do self-seeding this way to make the races more accessible and give people more options. Or maybe it’s to eliminate the need to check USAC licenses to carefully at check-in.
