Levi's doing Copperopolis

From Levi's Twitter feed:

Levi_LeipheimerJust registered for the Norcal classic Copperopolis road race on 4/11. Hope to see a bunch of you out there, it's a great race!
Wow. There's plenty of suffering to go around at Copper with just the local yokels. P/1/2 field: you're in for a world of hurt!

I was talking to one of the guys registered for the Pro-1-2 race yesterday (Sunday). He was telling me how much he liked the Copperopolis Race, how close he'd come to winning over the years, and this was his A-race. Looks like he might have to be happy if he takes second this year.

My buddy said he saw Levi race there 2 or 3 years ago and he dragged the pack around for 3 laps, got tired of that and just soloed off the front. At the end he just rode right through the finish line, got in his truck, and drove home.

You mean Levi do not even wait around to pick up his Velopromo T-shirt?

Nope, this race is 110 miles of suck and usually gets about 50-75 in the p/1/2 with less than half finishing.

does Levi's attendance ever boost patronage of the race?

The race is a Cali classic that really only brings out the hard men. It's the kind of course that you go straight out the back if you aren't suited for it. A couple years ago Dave Z was there also. That's just how we roll (j/k i would go but I'm in the spit out the back catagory on the hills)

just trying to figure out why Levi would do the race if he essentially just rides off the front of the field.

Ugh. I'm going down there knowing I'm going to get spit out the back on the hills. My only goal is to hang with the front group for at least a full lap.

He does many races around here. He usually kills the TTT and he rides it solo. Its also good training, the roads are closed, and many of the local pro's show up. Im sure Andy and Ben will be there, so he can atleast have a little fun.

doesn't it suck for everyone else though? especially those who may have been in contention for some prize money, had the big boys not shown up?

Certainly the experience is monumental for those who actually get to race with the european pros, but I imagine the $$ they're missing out on isn't piddly...

I doubt the winner gets much more the $300 at the most, I would guess its even less.

Is California Giant Berry a pro team? I was under the impression that they were Elite Amateurs.
