CTS Field Test

I did it today with the PT to get a fitness base. I wasn't as fresh as I had hoped to be. Anyone else tried it? What are your thoughts on this test? It consists of 2 3-mile time trials to determine your training zones and fitness. Even though they were only 8 minutes they kicked my a$s (test explained HERE on page 4-6)

It was 88 degrees and I did it on a river trail (that had a couple underpass drops).

I averaged:

340 watts
7:56 seconds

I am wondering how often I should test myself? I was thinking once a month.

Page 8 looks pretty accurate as far as the zones go. You might want to try a 2x20 MAP test to confirm.

I was afraid someone was going to tell me that

This test seemed pretty painful but I'll post the comparison when I do the 2x20.

The 2x20 is not as painful. Just start at 280 watts and slowly ramp up if possible.

Setting your FTP based on the 8' CTS field test is probably good enough to get you going, chris carmichael knows what he is talking about for sure.

A few years ago, I had a Lactate Threshold test done in the lab. A couple of days later I did a CTS field test. My LTHR, and power at LT were virtually identical.

Were they both about 170 or what?

MY LTHR was 165. The FTP (particularly at that time ) was too humilating to post publicly.
