Socal, middle of June

There's about a 50/50 chance I'll be in Camp Pendleton / San Diego the week of June 14th - 19th.

Any race calendars about that I can get a perusal of anything on the schedule that week within ~1 hr drive from there? Or Tues/Thurs night hard rides - eg, don't mind getting blown out the back.

Just made my reservations to fly into San Diego Sunday. Woot! Bringing the frankenbike for some evening rides after all day conferences from Sun-Fri.

They let civilians cycle through the base or do you happen to be in The Suck?

There is one road that goes through the base that allows cyclists. Aside from I-5 it's the only way to ride between Oceanside and San Clemente. You just have to have a valid US ID to get on the base.

Lucky you just in time for June gloom....be prepared for cool dreary mornings. Still some great riding down there though. Take advantage and do Mt Palomar, good climb.

I should know more of my daily schedule after Monday. I'm there for conference, but as these things go - there's usually some "sluff time" built in. I've got friends down in San Diego I'll need to see a night or two, and plan on getting out by Palomar/Henshaw for some riding. It's a good time to have a little more flexible schedule with a taper week.

Wondering if climbing Palomar during a gloomy June morning would result in a spectacular above the clouds finish?

Well.. that goes from the daily thunderstorms in DC. But c'mon now. I lived out there 3 yrs and never saw a "rainy" month. "Cool dreary" is a seriously relative phrase.

True dat, just wanted to give you a heads up....first timers get pretty disappointed when they come to the beach in June only to find that the sun never shows up and it's cold.

Admittedly, in 3 yrs calling San Diego "home" I never spent a June in San Diego. Yr 1: June in Arizona. yr 2: June in the Persian Gulf and Indian ocean. yr 3: June in Iraq.

So... I guess I would be technically a first timer myself.

Rode with them once, they were nice folks. They start in Oceanside for a couple of their rides.

^Buncha sandbaggers.

Come down to the San Diego Velodrome on Tuesday Night. If you have track experience, you can race for $10. You'll need a bike for that. If you're not racing, you can hang out in the stands.

Warm-up starts at 6:30PM. www.sdvelodrome.com

Going to do the Tuesday nighter out of El Camino Bike Shop. Guaranteed to be able to get there and back on time and it'll fit in well with my schedule for the week. Will head out and do two laps of the same course Monday night with the GPS for some endurance miles.

Wed/Thurs still up in the air and flying out Friday.
