lose weight - race great?

Weight obviously is an important factor but I'm sure there has to be a trade-off somewhere. This was prompted by a picture of Bradley Wiggins at P-R, he states he has been losing (sorry, this is teh internet, I mean loosing)weight to help him concentrate on road racing.

But, I mean, blimey!

Anyone out there felt that they have lost too much weight and it has hindered them?

Damn, he looks like an AIDS case.

gsteinb 04-14-09 08:17 AM

When I got down to 150 or a few clicks below I didn't feel as strong and thought my sprint really suffered.

substructure 04-14-09 08:19 AM

I think there is a trade off for us mere mortals.

ZeCanon 04-14-09 08:21 AM

I had a teammate last year with a bit of an eating problem, and he ended up being completely useless all season. He was a former u23 national team guy, so for him to go from super fast to completely useless was pretty huge.

I went from 190 to 180 and noticed a significant improvement in my climbing. Of course, my method for dropping the weight was lots of miles so that might've helped too.

Then I got really sick with an intestinal bug and got down to 164. I lost all kinds of strength / fitness, but noticed I can still climb with the leaders. Odd, huh?

I bet one of those kids on the left is saying to the other something like "Look at that bony arsed skeleton in the argyle!"

Yup.

I went from 180 last year to the 165 range and can climb much better but still suck at it. My FTP went up as well.

I went from 182 last year to 170 in January back up to 178. Yay me.

Too much beer I guess.

substructure 04-14-09 12:34 PM

Down 10 pounds from last year (hovering @ 165lbs). What has it done? Well, er ... let me think on it.

jrennie 04-14-09 12:42 PM

I started cycling at 140 and I'm now 160-163. I'm doing it wrong :D

When I first got serious about cycling I didn't understand that I needed to eat more and better to support it.
I'd been a runner before that, and my training had been limited by injury. The difference between 45 minutes a day and three hours a day is a lot of calories.

I'm 6' tall and got as low as 127 lbs before I figured out something was wrong. I don't know what it did to my performance as I was still learning what I was doing on a bike. Eventually I figured out that my healthy race weight was around 138 lbs. That was when I was 29, now at 48 it's more like 141- I can't get quite as lean and I am trying to carry a bit more muscle.

If all goes as planned, I will look close to this come Monday (dirt, face o' pain, and all).
I've scheduled 9 hours, 5 on Saturday, 4 on Sunday with three of the fastest guys around here. One is an X pro who was on Lemonds Worlds team. I heard Saturday we're doing 1200' of climbing.

Dear Lord have mercy.
