Omniums/points races

So if you were thinking about doing a race weekend somewhere. Say three races, crit, TT and a RR. How much would the presence of ominium scoring and payouts effect your decision to go? Or do you hate TTs (or crits, or RRs) and would skip one of the races even if there were the possibility of some extra money at the end and couldn't care less about the omnium.

I like to race, I ride my bike to race, I train very hard to race. If the opportunity to race more is out there, I would do it.

Usually for stage races, if you don't finish one race, you're basically eliminated from the race, which means you can't race the next day.

I like the stage race format more than the Omnium, because it favors the RR over the Crit or the TT.

But you didn't ask about that.....

For me, it's a given that I won't be top 10 in any crit, ever. So if I'm not going to get any points in the Crit, I just won't race it. I'll hope that I do well enough in the TT and RR so that I have enough points to finish well overall.

Thanks to those of you who answered my question.

It would be points. More heavily weighted towards the RR and Crit. You wouldn't have to compete in all the events to score in the omnium, although it would help.

I am trying to determine if it is worth my time and money to deal with points.

Personally I am with SwimBike. I am just happy to race my bike.

From an amateur racer's standpoint, I do think it's cooler to tie the races together somehow, rather than just having them stand alone. It also reduces the number of people who skip race 1 in order to have an edge on people in race 2. I think it's a good idea to reward racers for racing 2 or 3 in a row, instead of punishing them.

I just found out our club racing weekend in Sept is going to be an omnium. Last year it was 2 separate, a RR Saturday and a crit Sunday, but on Sunday the attendance was really weak.

So the thought this year, we have a TT on Sunday to attract triathletes and bolster the attendance $, but make it an omnium so they don't have to race the other races.

Plus hopefully the omnium prize list means more USCF guys hang around for the crit on Sunday.

I like the omnium format too. That way the TT or crit 'specialists' can come out and win the race but not contest the over all. I'd think though that a lot of people would still come out for a three day event and just make a weekend of it regardless if it was a points race.
