Greatest

I know this has probably been asked before but "Who are the greatest racers?

Devil 05-25-04 12:48 PM

Merckx, Hinault, Coppi, Anquetil, Armstrong are my top five in post-war racing. And not necessarily in that order except for Merckx, who is the greatest cyclist to ever saddle up.

I'd say, for post WW2... Coppi, Merckx, Anquetil, Poulidor, Henault, Sean Kelly, Indurain, Armstrong... something like that

ohsurfrider 05-25-04 01:05 PM

Are you guys forgeting about Lemond?

Laggard 05-25-04 01:11 PM

Cyclinghalloffame.com has it about right:

Merckx
Hinault
Coppi
Bartali
Anquetil
Indurain
Gimondi
Bobet
Zoetemelk
Armstrong
Moser
Binda
Van Looy
Kelly
Poulidor
Lemond
Van Impe
De Vlaeminck
Ullrich
Fignon
Janssen
Bahamontes
Gaul
Zabel
Garrigou

The only truth concealed by Laggard's excellent link is that Merckx is barely comparable with the rest. The best two riders ever are Eddy............. and any other rider.

I think my mom had a bike pre WW2..............?

Laggard 05-30-04 06:05 PM

Right on.

I can't think of many sports with as big a gap between the greatest and the next guy.
