Race report: The reality of Racer Ex

Wake at 6:15 for 9:15 event. Drive to race. Rainy, wet auto racing track. Drop tire pressure. Enter 90 minute P/1 race. Small field, 5 guys from one strong team, 3 guys from another, two from another, and so on down to a bunch of independent contractors. Big, big motor guys.

Me all by myself.

Start racing. Slipping and sliding. Cool burnouts when attacking. Chase, bridge, repeat. Thought I was in breaks that should stick several times but nyet. The 4 man one that did, I wasn't in. Remaining riders throwing grenades. Lots of "let's see who can hold 500w the longest" stuff. Chase, attack, bridge, Etc. 30 minutes to go another group of four monsters goes away without Ex.

Oy vay.

Looooong solo bridge, finally get there. Too cooked to sprint or do much in the closing minutes, end up at the back end of the group sprint.

9th.

Collect check.

6 hours later line up for the open 40+. 8 guys from one team, 4 from another, 3 from another and...me all by myself with that damn birthmark. I sneeze, there's 8 guys there with kleenex. Got into one break that had all the representation but was shut down because folks didn't like the mix (re: I was in it).

45 minute race isn't enough to wear out the accumulated firepower, took a last lap flyer which knocked the field down a bit. Rolled in 10th.

Collect check.

Did not crash. Made back entry fees. Nice hard training block for Gila. Looking into fake beards.

Gary Larson?

Sounds like a fun day. I'd go with a full mask (a la Racer X) instead of the beard. And where are your 40+ team mates (aside from WR who I know will be there in a couple years - looking at you EDR!)?

Very nice to be in the money--well done.

Man, sounds rough. Those MKV guys are like army ants. You'll recall they worked K.S. and I over at Bear Creek last year (though I had no birthmark). 15 racers, 7 of them MKV.

Maybe consider letting the leg hair grow out, and race on a steel bike with 32h wheels...

Have fun at Gila!

Don't worry RacerX's band of over 40 assassins will be in full force at the Age Based State championships. The story will be a different one then.....

So, you are a marked rider that is already isolated at the start line and the other teams totally F'd you over all day. I'm "guessing" that any break that you got into was going to fall apart. WTF did you expect? Even in Texas they aren't that stupid!

All in all you did great. You got in some great training rides and it didn't cost much out of pocket. Now in the process did some rivals "show some cards"?

That's still awesome X.

I'm a marked man too. It usually goes like so, "Ah, don't worry about him. He'll attack, bridge, and work until he's cracked."

At last count Rock has 4 openings. Too bad it would be a sin to take Krylon to the Ridley.

You know RacerX, my teamies are trying to get me to do 40+ since I'm such a young whipper snapper at 39 who's racing age happens to be 40.

I damn near took James Bailey this weekend on another long solo attempt. 5.5 of 8 laps off the front this time. I did have a little help as I bridged to a guy who was pulling another one around. But I made a mistake of waiting on them (gave back just about the same amount of time waiting as the pack caught me by just before the line). I seem to have a thing for biting off more than I can chew.

All I need is:
Some 5hitty conditions (perferably high winds, wet and cold will do too)
flat straight roads or uphill too (downhills and fast corners are scary and slow me way down)
One other soloist to recover behind every now and then.

You can even dump my ass well before the line, my feelings won't be hurt. Losing first place to KB in these here parts ain't such a bad thing you know. I run just like a teammate when I find a friend in a break.

Just how fast are those 40+ races? I thought they would be too fast for me but I'm seeing some teammates doing well in those who I can outrun pretty easily.

Speed varies greatly depending on who is in there, the course, conditions, and how the bigger teams want to race it. Anywhere from 1/2 to 4/5. You'd actually have a better shot of doing well in a break if I wasn't in there, virtually every break I've been in recently immediately gets chased down, teams are afraid I'll just dump the break guys at some point.

Which is probably true.

Sunday's ride I decided to see how the other half lived and just sat in and took maybe three pulls in 2 hours. Covered everything then just cheesily took the town sprint. Boring, though I could snack on solid food no problem and caught up on some reading

I've only raced once - later-stage of a stage race last year - where I was marked.

It sucks. I can't imagine it every race.

Good luck.
