Collegiate Nationals Roll Call

Colorado State (my school) is hosting collegiate nats again this year. Anyone going to be making the trek to Fort Collins?

Road race is slightly different from last year. Instead of heading straight up the hill next to the stadium, we will have about 4 miles of neutral role out before turning left and then going over the Horsetooth Reservoir dams north to south. This means North Dam will be the first real test - about 1k with pitches up to 20%, about 10 minutes after the race starts.
Best photo I can find of North dam (its way steeper than it looks in this photo):

The dams are going to split everyone. My guess is the field will be down to 50-60 (from over 100) after North dam, and another 10-15 will be gone by the time we get back to Masonville. Like last year, we will do 4 loops near Masonville, but in the opposite direction this year. That means the elevation over the course of the lap is gained in stair steps rather than one long false-flat. Whether or not the laps are selective will depend on wind. My guess is they won't be except for a few guys who might already be fried.
Heading back towards the finish there is one long (10 minute) climb that kicks up near the top, but is big-ring worthy for the most part. The race will split here again, especially if there is a tailwind. That is followed by a shorter (3-4 minute) kicker. Small gaps over the top of this climb turn into huge gaps on the following downhill, so be careful. After this climb is a long false-flat uphill drag. The final climb is "suicide hill" which is the same climb we finished with last year - 18% for 200m or so then levels out to about 6% for another half kilometer. Fast downhill, then 2k of flat back to the stadium and the finish line. Unless someone can come over the top of Suicide with a pretty sizeable lead (10-15 seconds) my guess is it will come down to a sprint out of a relatively small group.

Course Map

The crit is pretty much the same as last year, except they removed one section where the road narrowed and put it on a much wider road. Course is still pretty flat and very very wide. Super fast.

The TTT course is brand new. It's a big square north of town, about 18 miles (6mi longer than last year). It starts out with some small rollers, then leg #2 is all slightly downhill. Leg #3 rolls a bit again, and leg #4 is primarily a false-flat uphill with a couple rollers thrown in at the end. Moral of the story: the team that paces the best will win, because that last stretch feels very, very long if you're blown. Watch out for rumble strips in two places. They aren't bad enough to crash you unless you've never been on a TT bike before, but they will surprise the hell out of you at 30+mph.

Any more questions about courses and such, feel free to ask. Things should be much more organized this year than last year, since we have had a lot of time to get things going. Last year USA Cycling didn't make their location decision until the middle of february so we had less than 3 months to pull the whole thing together. It's a pretty massive undertaking.

So who's going to be there?

Sounds like fun. I ride the same roads as defending champ Chris Butler, and I know from our Paris Mtn times in Greenville, SC that I would not be in contention.

My team missed qualifying by a few points, and I'm not high up enough to qualify as an individual so no Nats for me. Good luck though, it seems like you're coming in to form at the right time, and you definitely have a leg up knowing the course and being able to ride it all the time.

yep, missed by 4 spots to qualify as an individual. I'm the only A, so our team's obviously not going. A buddy of mine is going D2 though

Way out of my league. I'll be at Davis thought. Isn't it the same course as CAL did in '05?
