Mt Rushmore of US Cycling

ESPN did a thing about each state's "Mt Rushmore of sports" i.e. picking the 4 icons for each state.

The Hampsten interview linked in another thread suggests that Hampsten would be on USA's cycling Mt Rushmore.

Would he?

To me, Major Taylor, Greg Lemond, and Lance Armstrong are locks. Hampsten is an obvious candidate for the 4th spot.

But is Hampsten a lock?

Other candidates?

There are a lot of disciplines aside from Road which deserve consideration.

Or are we just talking about the Road Cycling Mt. Rushmore?

All male US cycling, hence Major Taylor. Taylor makes it imho because he was so dominant on the track, and track racing was the major cycling discipline of the day. I'm not aware of any other track guys, that I would put up there.

And for me, you'd have to really standout as a mountain biker to make it.

I think the 4th pic gets a little bit difficult. I can see a case for Overend, but MTB was still somewhat of a fringe discipline when he won his World Championships.

I'd probably vote for the Cash Register because he was so dominant in US racing and the two TDF stages gives him some international cred (and I like him better than Hampsten.)

But its hard to put him above Hampsten , the only american to win the Giro, 4th in the TDF, an epic TDF stage win, and the Tour of Switzerland.

I would have made a case for Floyd, but that went out with the Jack Daniels.

When Nothstein did take to the road, my recollection was he was kind of average, which may not be totally fair given the point he was in in his career.

But if we're trying to pick 4 icon's, it's going to be difficult to make it from what is largely an obscure discipline.

Bob Roll, but just because the volume of stone they would need to remove to to create a likeness of the gap between his teeth could be used to build second monument, the Mt. Rushmore of BF, with botto, Pcad, RyanF and Tom Stormcrowe on it.

Just to throw it out there, Connie Carpenter should at least be in the discussion.

Agreed, but OP said membership on this mountain requires a Y chromosome.

Ha! This is totally not completely related to the topic at hand, but close enough that I don't feel bad about it.

I made this messenger bag for a friend a while back.

why's it have to be all male? is OP a chauvinist?

Lemond and Armstrong, sure. People who took the sport to another level, both globally and at home. That would put Major Taylor on the map. Frank Kramer as well, or is he an also-ran compared to Taylor?

Sheila Young... Connie C...

Phinney?

John Howard?

George Mount?

Because it's very difficult to compare across Gender. Particularly given the disparate opportunities available for women cyclists.

They can have their own Mt Rushmore.

How about the first Euro-Pro American cyclist since Marshall Taylor lit it up in 1900 and 1902?
