Tour of Washington County

Regular registration opens on 4/29. Who's in for the GC? What category? What team?

I'm in. Evolution Cycling Club. Cat 4.

I'm in for cat 4, NCVC. I got the super-secret pre-reg code.

Interestingly, it looks like they are doing everything but the cat 5 race by time this year, not omnium points. Is that correct? If so, it looks like everything will most likely come down to the TT, at least for the cat 4 race. Time to start practicing 20 K TTs...

Bike Rack Cat 4

My bet for the 4's it will come down to the TT. I don't see either the RR or Crit course favoring a large enough gap to decide the GC.

Yep, they've changed it to true stage race format (including time cuts) for all but W4 and M5. But these categories don't even get a real omnium, because we get no crit. Last year, they let the women enter the open crit separately (for experience, at least), but they won't do it this year b/c of the time scoring. It sucks. My W4 RR is too short. Yeah, that course hurts a lot, but one more lap would be great. It also sucks that they are starting the M5 after W4 AGAIN. Last year, I killed it up the hill on the 2nd lap with one other woman, we strung out the field and went like hell only to be neutralized just after turn 1. All but a few were still considered to be a part of the pack at that time (we hadn't hit the next rollers yet, where I hoped to thin the field a little more), so most of them got to restart with us. Plus, my HR was near max and then I had to stand around for 10min. Fun! Can't wait to do it again.

With no TT rig, I'm not really gunning for GC.

But, if I complete the ToWC, I will have accomplished one of my goals for this season: compete in a stage race!

Agreed. Although the RR may be hilly enough to knock some of the real TT beasts off the back and keep them from winning the GC.

1st year the smithsburg RR was on the calender the winning breakaway won by about 4 minutes, I know, cause I was in it . Chase group finished about 2' behind the winning break, with the field (do the math) about 2' behind that.

if you guys dont allow a "negative" race () the TT doesnt have to be the decisive stage, but in all likelihood it will decide things.

Good point, last year the heat alone was enough cause a more than a few drops and DNF's in each race. Speaking of which I don't know if I am ready for 80+ temps at Ephrata this weekend.

Are you complaining about being able to race Ephrata in 80 degree sunny weather?

I wish I didn't have to work this weekend.

The heat last year was brutal. I used up one of my bottles just dumping water on my head.

NCVC. Cat 4.

...and yeah, it's a stage race judged by time but they are having time bonuses for the RR and crit... although that probably still won't make up for the TT. That series of hills at the end of the RR will put a few seconds on folks, too.

I'm moving back to DC at the end of May/beginning of June, so I plan on taking part, cat 4.

On a side note, what are the teams in the area that have a pretty decent presence in the 3/4 fields? I'm familiar with who/where the teams are based, but didn't race when I lived in DC before, so am looking to hook up with a team when I move back (or before if possible).

NCVC, Route 1 Velo/Arrow Bicycle, Whole Wheel Velo Club, DC Velo Club, DVR/Bike Rack, HPC-List... most clubs have 4 squads. And if they don't yet, every 4 squad will eventually have 3s.

That's because Cat 4 teams typically have no f-in clue how to make a break stick. Whole Wheel will be representing.

Hopefully there will be less negative racing at ToWC than there was at Ephrata.

4's... and by negative, I mean "racing against others winning and not racing for your team to win."

At least that's how this weekend's road race went down.

That being said, I had fun racing with your team this weekend. I just wish they'd have let 2-3 of us up to your existing break and y'all probably would have taken 1st in the GC. But that break was doomed to failure the way it was covered.

Not gonna argue with NomadVW on this one. If we had him and the guy who eventually took 2nd GC in the break it woulda gone a long way to making it stick. I'm not gonna fault my teammates for their covering, though - they had the confidence (too much, it turned out) that us two had a chance of making it. Sadly, I don't think any of them had seen Nomad's power files as much as I had. We're all still learning.

I'll be at ToWC, Cat 3, The Bike Rack.
