Any degradation would be extremely unlikely to yield a false positive. If anything, the reverse. In theory, samples can be maintained indefinitely, in practice you are correct to assume that there are problems. Ironically, testing itself poses the greatest threat to the integrity of any samples. I'm assuming (and it might be incorrect) that samples intended for long-term storage are maintained at -80 C. The issue is the freeze-thaw cycle every time you remove part of the sample for testing.

I don't see why anyone is surprised or shocked by this anymore. The analogies have been made before but if baseball players, who have guaranteed contracts from teams that are stable and have longer carreers, use the stuff its easy to see why professional cyclists attempt to game the system. From what little knowledge I have of cycling contracts, it seems that they are at best wishful thinking. If you perform everything is good, if you suck=see ya, if the team folds=so sorry, if a youngster shows promise= thanks but...
its very similar to politicians. short term contracts . no skill set to do anything else. limited employment options. We are not surprised when a pol lies, cheats, manipulates. we expect it.
so why all the consternation when someone gets caught? it is what it is. people trying to sustain their way of life. I dont agree with it but I can see why they do it.

even though it was five years ago in 2004, his amstel/fleche/liege troika is in question for me. a top ten rider elevated to cycling god for a month's time??
maybe...or maybe he was just ahead of the curve.
