i don't get it. i wear gloves in most races because i'm a cat 5 and i have had enough close calls. if i were a pro, i might never wear gloves, but i imagine there is an incentive for them to do so from the sponsorship.

There are crashes in all categories -- including pros -- and probably just as many.

i don't have a point. just a slow morning at work.
though I don't really blame you for missing the signs - most of my threads and posts are as mindless as this.

One reason many of us non-pros wear gloves is because we have to work with our hands. If we crash and mess up our hands it makes it harder to work and make a living.

After this I always wear gloves now, and in crits I'm wearing full fingered gloves. It took about a month for that wound to fully close up and I still have slight pain in the area from the impact.

I didn't used to worry about gloves too much. Then botto made a snarky comment, and then I crashed and my gloves saved me a whole lot of my palms. So now I'm in the "gloves, always" camp (and with a better appreciation of how botto's snark can be useful)

can't stand odd tanlines on my hands so no gloves for me. I'm sure I'll regret it sometime. I only wear gloves when I have to start wearing long sleeve jerseys.

I've been noticing Rahsaan Bahati has been wearing MTB gloves in crits lately, I know he also recently went down and opened his palm up too.
When I went down and wasn't wearing gloves I was on a nice leisurely recovery ride near the beach, almost didn't wear a helmet that day, didn't think twice about not wearing gloves; I was rueing that decision for a month.
I can dig all you cats who aren't wearing gloves, really I can. That's your decision, but I'm telling you between rock climbing, drumming and now cycling I've done a lot of things that have destroyed my hands. I have so much scared tissue on my knuckles just grazing them across rough surfaces opens up the skin... trust me NOTHING is more troublesome than a palm injury.

umd, what full finger gloves do you wear? I remember you saying somewhere that they were nice and breathable. I'm a computer major, so I need me hands/fingers. I wear a pair of PI gloves that aren't full finger, but I would like to pick up a pair of full finger gloves that aren't too hot for summer weather.

Only time I don't wear gloves is when I'm riding my TT bike. Otherwise I wear them even when training. I'm a film editor and I need my hands to be in good shape. I wear padless gloves, the new Giro Zero's are very nice. Besides what else am I going wipe the snot with?

They're not padded - I never liked padding.
I love them. They breathe very well, and I prefer leather over synthetic when it comes to my palms.
Here's a pic of me wearing them:

One of my least favorite crash stories involves a friend who went down in a sprint finish with palm-gloves (no finger covering). His gloves got shredded, his palms were fine, but three of his fingernails got shoved completely backwards, hanging on at 90-degree angles. He had to go the emergency room... and it took the emergency-room doctor quite some time to clip and pull them off. Extremely painful.
As a result, I wear full-fingered gloves. Odds are that even if-or-when I crash, my fingernails won't flip like his... but its pretty simple insurance. In fact, in a sprint-finish crash of my own last summer, my gloves were torn across the fingers... but had I not been wearing the gloves, it would have been my flesh.
