Not placed, would you care?

At a race a couple weeks ago (sherman park) I got what looked to be 10th, waited around for results but due to the rain they had computer problems so I left because it's Cat 5 and I was more looking just so I knew where I finished. Anyways looking at results for a race last weekend I found that I was not placed in the sherman park race. So even though I am a Cat 5 and I know points aren't awarded, I still kind of care that the two races this website has listed for me are both DNP (crashed out of the other one). I don't blame anyone for me not being placed correctly, thats not what this is about.

This is not so much a question of should I care or not because I know I shouldn't but for some reason still do, but rather if/when this happens to you do you care? It can still apply to other Cats if you didn't place well enough for upgrade points.

If I was in the top 10 and not placed, I'd be upset. But that's me speaking as a 4 with 9 top 10s. One more makes me a 3.

For a 5, all that matters is that you start 10 mass start races.

It sucks but you get used to it. The hard fact is none of this matters to anyone but us.

I have figured out a lot of things that lead to getting misplaced. The biggest one around here - and was most likely the cause of your misplacement - is bib number placement. Sherman was a dreary day for the 5's and a downpour for us 4's. Low light - bunch sprint - bad pictures coming over the line. If your number placement is off or if you're "hiding" behind someone else at the line they do the best they can.

As you mention....you're a 5 so no biggie. Being a 5 is all about learning. You just learned you need to bring warm clothes and need to change out of your kit as soon as the race is over so you can stick around to contest the results....

Just be thankful you're not the guy I overheard after a 4/5 crit on Memorial Day weekend who asked an official how to go about protesting the race. His name wasn't on the results sheet, and when they went back and reviewed the finish, he crossed the line in 38th!

Yeah, even if you win the next one, and people went back looking for your name to see where the hell you came from, seeing a 10th place wouldn't even get a shrug: you'd still look like you came out of nowhere. Anything out of the points I didn't care about (when I cared about points).

Certainly, as a Cat 5, getting 10th is still "something," and it's good for you to be proud of that. Everyone behind you would have finished in front of you, but they couldn't. As mentioned above, nobody else cares though.

I'd want to be placed, especially if I was near the top 10. You paid the money to race and within reason you should get an accurate result. It might be different if you were 30th or something. That being said, you don't have any recourse if you didn't say anything during the 15 minute protest period. And I'm saying both as USAC offical who's scorred races, and as a cat 3 who's been in your situation plenty of times.

So, here are the take home lessons (cat 5 is about learning right?):
1) make sure your numbers are placed correctly
2) if you placed well enough to care about your result, check the resutls and protest within the protest period for that race. (IIRC, 15 minutes for single events, and it's more complicated for stage races)

Personally, I wouldn't give it a second thought- cat 5 race with no points. Placing in these events is always a cluster**** no matter how well organized they are for some reason. Also, another person already said it- these results mean nothing to anyone but ourselves. The excuses are a plenty however.
"The cameras weren't rolling."
"Your chip wasn't attached to your name."
"Someone's cell phone caused interference with the timing system."
"We lost the results (to a race that finished 10 min ago?)"

Yeah, thare are 1000 things that can go wrong doing results. But I believe as officials we should strive to produce good results, and yes, as riders we should be understanding when the officiating staff doesn't get it perfect. My 02 cents FWIW.

Would it be harder to "prove" you raced when you try to upgrade to 4 though?

Or do they just take your word for it?

In the 5's all you have to do is start 10 races.

I'd be upset if I made the top 10 but show a DNP in the results. In the end it doesn't matter, but I like to have an accurate race resume.

No. They can always check with the promoter to check the start list if they want to. In reality though...they kinda don't give a crap.

I have to say seeing my name in the results mattered a lot more to me when I was a 5 than it does now. If I know I made the points and I don't see my name I'd do something about it but otherwise I don't care that much.

As a 5 everything seemed like such a big deal, making the top 20 was important, so I get it when I see a post on the local racing website about a 5 not getting counted for his 32nd place. You want some sort of recognition for your hard work. I think you'll find that the more you race the less this matters...soon it's going to be about getting the first W...that will be the all consuming issue in your bike racing life...

With my available hours to train cut back the way they have been, and especially after being in a serious crash a couple of years ago, I'm perfectly content to finish unscathed now that I've reached the penultimate, final, end-all, be-all category . That doesn't mean I don't have the competitive drive or desire to place, just that my weekend doesn't hinge on it if it doesn't pan out (and nothing got broken).

One thing that is disappointing is that there are still ****ty riders. I was convinced that getting out of the 4's was what it took to get away from the nonsense and into a group of more cohesive riders. Wrong as usual.

Only need 20 points. Just win two road races, or get 6th in 20 big crits

Seriously though, the points add up in a hurry when you start winning.

ummm, reaching the penultimate category = cat 4, assuming that cat 3 is the "ultimate" cat.
