that's 3 to 4 hours from DC. if you want actual answers, you'd be best served to start your own thread.

<-- another n00b here

i'm also in the DC area been riding consistently for only about 4 weeks, but i'm hoping to train and start with a club/team during the later months of this season and the off season. i'm also intersted in cycling with a goal of racing. i live in the tysons corner area in falls church and usually ride into Arlington and DC for my routes (occassionaly westbound on the wo&d). i'm going to hopefully join up with the group rides with wwvc and coppi, but i only avg about 16-17mph for rides out and back from my place -- i feel i need to up this for entering any crits, RRs, or TTs.

great thread to stay posted on

the Reston Bike Club (RBC) rides (that leave from the caboose in Herndon I believe) are also good, fast, group rides on Tuesday / Thursday.

Your first ride is free.

Then you need to join RBC for insurance reasons.

(that's the official position, anyways. not sure if anyone would try and stop me if I just happened to jump onto the train)

That would be Cat 1 cross racer Wes Shempf. Probably the only guy in the area who can make Jeramiah Bishop work for his money at the CX races.

Quite a few C3 racers on the road these days.

The parking lot's on the left. Ride Leaves at 6:00 (ish). The Route (more or less).

Show up, sign the PPTC waiver, and hang on. Good group, Good times. I can't make Thursday, but perhaps I'll see you there later.

Doing the Thurs night Wakefield ride a couple times is a good idea before trying to do the Tues night if you're looking to hold on to the front end. There are routine sprint points that if you're not ready for, you'll either find yourself attempting to TT back to the lead, or just riding solo. Thurs night is typically a steadier pace - the A's don't normally split into an AA and A group and the sprints may/may not be contested in lieu of a 1 hour steady hammer pace - but that depends on what happened Tues nights. If Tues nights get rained out, Thurs tends to be pretty brutal.

Ask around at the rides you go to about their fall training and development programs - some might also say if they've got something like this on their site. MANY teams in the area have great "new racer" clinics throughout the year (but usually during the fall/winter off-season) that are essentially group rides with more experienced riders and racers teaching you the ropes from the basics of group riding and cornering to team tactics in a race.

I stopped caring and became a motor ref. It's the only way i'll ever make any money at this damn sport.

can we get each club to represent and give a little summary on what their respective club is all about, rides, training, membership? I think that would be helpful...I see a few guys have already done something like that, like Nomad WV did for WWVC...so represent your club and let prospective racers know what your all about...thanks

Uh not to be a @$$ but that is kinda of why we took the time to build team websites, there is a lot of good info there and you know it is "team approved" and not just some ya-hoo like me, who will point you in the wrong direction, if for no other reason than the fact that I have suffered far more concussions than any human should. Seriously if you haven't check all of them out.

Yeah... haha... I was trying to play fair earlier by providing as much abbreviated info about as many clubs as I could remember. I think many of us would be a bit tentative to either oversell our club here or speak out of our own expertise. I'm sure that most of the forum members would welcome conversations about their clubs, so feel free to send PMs to folks.

Sticking to pure facts, I'm one of the few Cat 4 racers on the National Capital Velo Club (NCVC) that frequest these forums. This year, we have about 160 licensed racers throughout the categories (including many juniors, too). This year we are organizing two road races, a circuit race, and a cyclocross race. Here are some things to check out:

Club's Web Site - NCVC.net
Team Rides (most have been mentioned already)

For future searchers on this thread - I'm also involved in the collegiate cycling scene by supporting the GW Cycling Team (George Washington University) that rides from the Foggy Bottom area. If you've got questions about that squad, lemme know. Most active racing members of the GW Cycling team are also on a USAC squad in the city. From what I can think of immediately, we've had folks ride for NCVC, R1V, and Bike Rack (not to mention Colavita-Bolla and the National U-23 team, too!).

no offense taken...your right, a few of the teams do have informative websites but there are many that dont have anything on them about membership...some do some dont...and its sometimes better to hear about the club directly from a member than reading the generic website intros...its more personable...
