Training Goals - Yes, Im a n00b and preparing to get flamed
Im thinking about entering in my first race. Of course, I want to win. However, I dont expect to.
What I do want to know is at what average speed and for how long I should train on my bike?
Any other advice you could offer?

Don't even worry about winning, worry about learning.
There is so much you can learn from just sitting in a race.
+1 to forgetting average speed. The surging and yo-yoing is brutal and that is what you need to be worried about. Sit in on some group rides to get used to draft and being around people.
Also, just do it. First hand experience>forum posts.

how should you train?
ride. have fun. ride with others. ride long. ride short. go fast sometimes. go slow sometimes. learn to recover. don't kill yourself, but don't be a wussy. do all this and continue to ride.
most importantly, race. maybe you'll get dropped. who cares? develop rage, train, and race again.

Ride for 6 months. Go hard sometimes. Increase power and duration.
Do group rides on the weekends that include people who race. If that goes well, then you can try entering a real race. If there are no groups in your area, then if you can average 22+ mph for an hour on a flat loop you are probably fast enough to hang in a Cat 5 pack at least.

I would go to Europe and try to get on a pro team. USAC system is much too slow with all those categories and upgrade requirements.
I think trying to ride with racers is a great idea. For one thing, that's how I learned that doing zero work is the only way I'll stay up with most of them.

Enter a race. Figure out why you didn't win, and work on that. Repeat.
