Wireless Ptap questions

I'm thinking about selling my wired Ptap and going wireless. A few questions:

• How long has the wireless been on the market? Are early years more problematic than the 2009 model?

• I just saw a spy shot of a new head unit. Does anyone know when that will go from vaporware to actual retail merchandise (i.e. be available from sources like Saris or Excel)?

Reasonably happy with the wired version. Except for the wires. If they break it's $70 and it takes me an hour to wire up the friggin bicycle again.

I probably just want the hub and I'd have my LBS lace it to my Zipp 404 rear rim.

Call Cycleops, I think the wireless upgrade is sub-$500. Or you may be able to do the $99 upgrade and buy a Garmin 500/705 or Joule.

If that's the case, that's what I would do.

It's not so much that the wire breaks frequently, it's that it's a pain when it does, and it makes moving the Ptap to different bicycles harder than it would be with the wireless. Just exploring the cost, but if Saris has an upgrade plan like that I'd probably do it.

$99 is the ANT+ upgrade, which is just a wireless protocol. Having a new wireless protocol doesn't do you any good when you don't have a wireless transmitter.

I have one of the early wireless ones, no problems. It's an SL from 2007 or so I think, works great.

I got one of the first SL wireless ones. It would drop data sometimes, although that didn't make it useless. After a couple years I sent it in for a rebuild (bearing was going out) and the fixfor the dropout problem. Now it is totally reliable. I wish I had gotten the ANT+ upgrade while I was at it as both the new PT head unit and the Garmin 500 look good.

I read on another Forum that they do a $500 wired to wireless upgrade. I'll call them and see if that includes ANT + and all the sensors, a new head unit/hr strap, etc. Presumably.

So you can't do the $99 upgrade then use the Edge 705 with it? If not, then why would you pay $99 to "upgrade"?

You can do the $99 upgrade if you already have a wireless hub (like me, I have an SL, non-Ant+ SL). Then you would be the same as a new SL+, and be able to use the Edge 705 or something similar.

If, like Pcad, you have a wired system, you can't upgrade to ANT+, because you don't have a wireless system.

Pcad, if your wired hub is 24 spoke you can sell it to me for $100 when you upgrade. I'm generous like that, and I have 4 harnesses and two head units.

I think the $500 upgrade now includes ANT+ actually... I asked CycleOps about this and think that was the answer I got (can't find the email...). Either way, $500 or $599 to upgrade is almost worth it... running cables on a road bike is not fun, but after you tried it on a couple of TT bikes, then you definately think about going wireless...

Would the existing head unit that I have from a wired p-tap work with a wireless if I went fo the upgrade? Or would I need to invest in another one?

P - I can hook you up with whatever you need at some shockingly good prices. Before you move on anything let me know what pricing and options you are looking at and we'll see if we can work something out....with the requisite BF-prima donna discount of course...

No...it wouldn't.

You would need a ANT+ wireless head unit.

argh. but what if it is just straight wireless? Or is the upgrade from wired to a wireless mean that you have upgraded to ANT+ rather than the old wireless?

I guess I could call saris myself...

Or a 705.... just contact Saris for upgrade options. Call them. They respond quickly. If you don't like their upgrade options then honestly contact me for some pricing to compare. psimet at psimet.com

It's not like you're going to find a new one for free but in comparison I think I have some of the best prices being offered.

The head unit will work with ANT+ devices after a simple firmware upgrade (you just download it, it's free), as long as it's wireless to begin with. A wired head unit will only ever work with a wired hub.

The wireless upgrade price for the Ptap SL is now $1000+ (called them this AM). I asked them where I could get some of what they're smoking.
