Those 53 chainrings are dangerous bastids IMO. It wouldn't have been as bad if he'd only been buzz-sawed by a 52.

I wonder how often someone gets tangled in the ring on a track bike in velodrome crashes. That could be bad too. This one looks pretty rough though.

A racer in these parts had stitches in his head (between his eyes) from a chain ring that nailed him.

Damn... A few mm in either direction, and that would have been much, much worse.

Many years ago, when helmets were covered by spandex (think Giro ProLight) instead of plastic, we inspected a friend's helmet after a crash in a Juniors race. There were chainring teeth imprints directly across the top of his helmet.

I have a chainring scar on my left calf. Not quite sure how that happened, it was a solo crash.

That's a good one. How long before he got back on the bike? Looks like he's 10 days out from the crash to me.

I have a nice chain ring scar that runs right down the front of my right shin from the bottom of my knee to the top of my foot... the chain ring hit bone all the way down and had I been a little left or right my leg would have looked like that guy's forearm.

This happened while mountain biking and coming down from about ten feet and required the use of all the first aid supplies I had to stop the bleeding.

Then I had to ride back 20 km.

don't know, but the dude is a hard man: a 50 + racer, who's obsessed with arcane world records, and a cancer survivor on top of it.

botto - that is some truly arcane and awesome stuff.

I am guessing this accident might delay his world record attempt... and that gearing is unbelievable.

Since most of the chainring is covered by the chain, wouldn't you have to get into the back of the ring somehow? Or do track rings stick through the chain since they're so tall?

Either way, I have a chainring scar on the back of my calf, from a solo crash, while tooling around a gravel lot before a race.

Yeah, on the back of the ring, but a finger in there, with a still-spinning wheel, would leave you only able to count to 9 by the time the crank completed its half-revolution.

A fixed wheel can be a really dangerous thing at either end as there is nothing to relieve chain tension if something like a finger gets caught and the momentum from the wheel will keep things spinning.

I can still count to ten using my fingers.

Some folks can't.

It ain't pretty.

"He’ll be using a bike with a massive 68 x 11 gear and 205 mm cranks"....I don't know what sounds more painful, the scar or that gearing!!!
