Heckle or Encourage

I like to spend most of the day at races when I go. Mainly this is because I see a ton of people I just dig hanging out with, but it's also so that I can spend all day yelling from the side of the course.

Cat-5's I find that I shout encouragement. "You can do it! Don't give in to the pain!." "Close that gap! don't let him get away!" "They're moving! Look for something to go next lap!", etc.

Cat-4's I'm just yelling inside the pack

Cat 1/2/3 - I shout stuff like "Yeah baby!" , "Hells yes!", "Drill IT!", "I love you rider 'Y'! I want to have your baby!"

I would consider all of the above encouragement.

Then comes cyclocross. I heckle. Everyone heckles. Someone yelled, "I've never seen such an expensive bike go so slow." at a teammate last week....to which he broke up laughing. I got a lot of heckles this week. I find myself heckling just about everyone.

So...the poll. Do you stick around? If so do you heckle, Ecourage, both, or watch in silence?

In cross, isn't heckling the same thing as encouragement?

road needs more heckling, though I somehow envision heckling a cat 3 crit leading to some kind of pansy-I-can't-fight-in-road-shoes wanna-be brawl

Both? So like giving your kid a hug while you’re spanking him?

I'm pretty sure many serious roadies would be crying on the inside after hearing that.

I don't cheer much, but I'm sick of encouragement from the sidelines. Why the hell do we cheer for someone who got dropped. When I get dropped, encouragement is the last thing I want to hear. I wish heckling was more common in the road scene.

I've never done cross.

You should do cross if you want to get heckled.

During the road season people take themselves way too serious. I think what pinky said would come true if you started heckling people in a crit. Heck, I've been in such foul moods after doing badly in a crit.

After cross, I'm just wearing a ***** eating grin.

I only encourage, but I have never been around the cross scene except for once when people encouraged me. So, I say stay positive, unless it is a baseball game and the ump is blind.

I like it when I am sitting 25th wheel in a crit, when the pack is single file, and someone yells at me "Move up!"

I was mostly yelling encouragement to friend who were cross racing this weekend. After one race a buddy came up and told me, "No matter how you mean it, after racing for a 1/2 hour it all sounds condescending."

Of course at one friend I yelled, "Pedal your asssssss, fatty!"
