Yippee!! Olympic Road Race live on TV!

G'day,

Yippee!!....we got the mens R/R race 'live' on TV!!!. In Oz, the free to air Olympic broadcaster has decided that they will 'give' all the less 'popular' sports to one of the lesser government funded networks, (SBS)......apparently the mens Road race falls into this catogary!.....SBS will televise it live from 7.45pm on sat 14/8......This may not sound like a big deal to you 'seppo's', but to cycling starved Aussies this is a shot in the arm for our sport in this country, (hmmm bad choice of words what with doping etc!)....yahoo....hitchy loves SBS!.....(but it goes until 1.45am & Hitchy has a 6hr training ride at 6am the next day )

cheers,

hitchy

If you could let us know a couple of hours before so we can go to the internet tv channel and try to watch it, that would be nice.

This is in the event they decide not to bother in the USA.

I've heard, but haven't looked to confirm myself, that every event will be covered by NBC (or one of its cable affiliates: MSNBC, CNBC, Bravo, USA, and Telemundo).

Just went to www.nbcolympics.com.

Here's one thing I found:

MSNBC: Friday, Aug. 20, 13:00 - 14:00 -- Cycling: Track Finals.

August 15 - on USA.
Womens road race live at 10:00 AM

Doesn't look like we're getting live coverage of the mens race. Unbelievable.

[offtopic] i always thought that pro atheletes weren't allowed to compete in the olympics. i guess that assumption is wrong - seeing how many pro-cyclists will be competing. can anyone clairfy as to when pros can\cannot compete? [/offtopic]

I think the amateur only thing was scrapped many years ago. Dream Team anyone?

Anyway, with all the channels and hours of coverage that NBC is showing, how is it that they can't show the mens race live?? All we're going to get is a few minutes of racing inbetween lots of swimming, track and little girls jumping around.

We get the womens race live. At the risk of pissing some people off - who cares?

1996 Atlanta was the first year that Pro's were allowed in the Men Road Race I believe.

So, for the uninformed, where does the term "seppo" come from?

G'day Moistfly,

sorry....I hate it when people use acronyms & 'buzzwords' that no -one else understands. I have been attempting to 'modify' some of my comments, (knowing full well that half the world doesn't understand Aussies!). so...again my apologies, I wasn't being a smart a**e, just typing how I speak. Ok ......'Seppo' translation

Aussies are huge on rhyming slang, (we get it from the English), Everything & everyone has a nickname, sometimes rhyming slang, sometimes not....they can be as obscure or obvious........for instance, EVERYONE with red hair in Aus is called 'Bluey', anyone with the surname 'Wright' will be called 'Lefty'. Generally, having a nickname bistowed upon you by an Aussie is a sign of friendship & acceptance, (either as a group or individually). They generally shouldn't be taken as an insult..Seppo?

'Seppo' is rhyming slang. American=Yank=Septic Tank=Seppo...see easy really!!. someone put up a link recently to a homepage site from one of your countrymen, who is living here.....a found the whole language hilarious & was quite hobnoured to be known as a 'seppo'....he'd actually started refering to himself as such....I'll find it & post it if anyone is interested,

There endeth the lesson.

It doesn't look like you 'seppo's' are gunna get live coverage of the Roadrace huh?. If you like I can log on & provide regular updates while its on , if that will help anyone out,

cheers,

Hitchy

PS...what's a 'moistfly'?

lol, awesome. I'm not offended, just curious what the term meant ... we are the septic tank people, bow to us . Anyway ... When I found out what 'moistfly' means i'll let you know. At this point it's just something that popped into my head one night. A lot of people find it derogatory which is entertaining to me because that's not the intent at all.

Well, it IS too bad the men's road racing won't be shown, but it's about FREAKIN' TIME they acknowledge that women actually race TOO. Shoot, this is the first time I remember seeing women racing on television this year. Did they even bother last year? No wonder why it's not as popular with women!

Well if you're talking about fit nubile female bodies, then rock on! Count me in.

Just makes no sense to show one but not the other.

Now on that I'll agree with you.
Just like it makes no sense to show the men's Giro live but not the women's.

But really, who cares about the men's road race, Lance won't be in it.

What's the time difference? Is Montreal the eastern standard time or central standard time for the USA?

I'm definitely going to have to see if I can get CBC on Seattle Comcast.

The nice thing about Women's is that my wife, who loves TDF, will have a whole new level of excitement.

I had to convince my wife that there was a women's TDF. Gives here something to train for.

And I will have to be very sincere when I tell her that she looks better in lycra than the Olympic athletes.
