Anyone ever gone to a Carmichael camp?

Hello,

Thinking of going to the March 2010 Climbing Camp in Tucson, AZ. Anyone been to one, especially a camp where Chris wasn't present? If so, was it worth it?

TIA.

I wouldn't go. Carmichael's coach they assigned me was awful. If you want to go to a Tucson camp, call or e-mail FinKraft coaching.

Or just go by yourself and climb up Mt Lemmon all day for a week.

One of my good friends went a few years back and he said he a great time but really got nothing out of it but some fun rides.

I rode up Mt. Lemmon last spring which is partly why I want to go back to Tucson. I looked at the FinKraft web site and it looks good but the Carmichael web site looks good too. Are the odds of getting a bad coach through FinKraft less than for Carmichael?

I guess I'll have to investigate FinKraft and some other camps.

Well a bunch of fun rides would be better than a bad coach. More than half of the reason why I want to go to a camp is to get in a good week of climbing. The coaching is important but secondary. I definitely don't have the discipline to get in a week of hard training by myself.

Well Cleave I emailed my buddy and I have to take back what I said...he loved it. Here is what he sent me.

You know Mike, it was one of the coolest things I've spent money on for cycling. It's not cheap, but their pitch is pretty accurate. You are treated like a full-on pro for a week. All you do is train, eat, recover, get massage, and have lectures about skills. Rides are totally supported; you flat and a guy hops out of a trailing vehicle and swaps out your wheel in less than a minute. It's a great way to compile some base, just a total immersion in cycling for a week. Very relaxing and great training. I'm sure he wouldn't regret it.

I imagine with Carmichael you're going to get more of the glam factor of course.... if you need a guy to hop out of the car to swap wheels kind of thing.

FinKraft will be led by Roger Aspholm who coaches a lot of NY/NJ guys and is a masters CX national champ.

The carmichael thing is 999 for 4 days.... roger's is $1250 for 7 days with meals included AND lodging i think (I think you all stay in a house together).

I just got back from Lemmon............... watch that altitude. That mountian killed me once I hit 7000 feet.

A friend of mine went for a number of years to the same camp/s in CA. I think his assessment is virtually identical to EDR's friend. He had an absolute blast.

I can't recall him saying anything negative about his coach. I know he rode with Carmichael, Katie Compton, some others, and he knew two of the mechanics (one based in RI, one in Gainesville FL). They all tell really good stories, all the time. He followed some basic schedule each week/camp - go hard to test yourself, do some training, try and get some recovery in, go hard to test again. Group rides, supported, with some "at your pace" stuff (climbing mainly). Classroom stuff too, meaning indoor lectures.

My friend immersed himself in racing for about 10 years (age 40-ish to 50-ish) and quit cold turkey two years ago. Only started riding this summer. Cat 3 I think (hm I don't know), good friend, helped me at Bethel for half those years. No aspirations for anything except having fun and challenging himself. I think for that it was well worth it. Now he's doing the same in yoga, and he laughs at how he can barely sustain 160 bpm for a minute.

I have very little of value to add to this thread, other than to point out I went for a ride with Roger a couple months ago...my god, is that guy strong.
