Vacationing in Austin - March 3/21-28/10

First, Let me say I'm posting here since my post is geared towards bike racers in Austin.

I'll be vacationing in Austin,Tx(with bike) 3/21-28/10 and would like to ride a training ride each day I'm there and race a crit(or two) if available. Anyone mind helping me out with a few things. I'm trying to kill two birds with one stone.. Vacation with the significant other and do a poor man's cycling camp.

#1. Is there a particular area in Austin that's best for find weekly training rides. Since I have yet to select at hotel. Closeness to training rides will be the deciding factor.

#2. Any notable races going on during the time I"m there.

#3. Is there a Austin cycling website geared towards racers.

Thanks.

And Thursday night crit at The Driveway (you gotta do it, great great venue and time imho).

Well, not sure you will find many organized rides M-F, but, go to txbra.org as Racer_Ex suggests and you can post to find folks with whom to ride. As far as location, I am biased to staying near, but not necessarily in, downtown. On Craigslist, you could probably find a home or condo for rent -- I like Tarrytown/78703 or within 10'-15' of there (but, I doubt you'll find a place for rent in Tarrytown). A place that is about 10-12' north of downtown when traffic is low is Staybridge off of 183. Pretty good place with reasonable rates. My mother in law and a friend stayed in this cute 2B house up off of Justin Lane (about 5-7' from downtown) last year; think it was about $1k for the week and my wife found it through vrbo. Here's something for $1100/week that is in a location I like a lot and that looks good on paper. Also, you might be surprised what some hotels can offer. Don't know your price range, so, sorry if out of line. I believe it is absolutely worth it to stay near downtown if you are visiting.

Poor man's cycling camp: head over to Foothill Parkway and if you see some really good cyclist going out for a ride, jump in with him :-)

Also, the Austin Tri Cyclist ride on Saturdays at 8 is a really fast ride. Once DST transitions, the Tuesday Nighter will start up, and that's southeast.

From downtown, you can ride to all of the big hills and ATC and the 'nighter.

Thanks for your help. My girlfriend receives discounts at the Marriott however there are quite a few there so I wanted stay at one closer to most of the rides. I just want to do a daily group rides(race pace if possible) and do my own rides before/afterwards sightseeing Austin. I don't see any crits the week I'm there so looks like I'm stuck doing training rides.

Well, that settles it then...

I need to go change my underwear. Really, I don't even care about bike racing in general after the Driveway. I'd be happy never racing anywhere else.

I love the Driveway too, except for that one turn where I ran out of pavement and broke my shoulder.

Yeah, that totally sucked.

FWIW, I've found that the outside to the right on that turn (up the corkscrew) gives me a nice path to pass before the start/finish curve. Wasn't that the turn where you went down?

No, I crashed in the bottom turn on the medium long course. The turn isn't technical, but I had a pretty far inside line and just got pushed off the pavement. Largely my fault...

On Tuesdays during Daylight Saving Time (starts March 14th so your are good here) there is a group that heads out to the legendary Tuesdaynighter course from Mellow Johny's bike shop at 5 I believe.

Thursdays has a critirium at the Driveway (look-up "Holland Racing Driveway Series")

On Saturdays you can to to Austin Tri-Cyclists bike shop for a really fast group ride that starts at 8:30am.

These are all rally great and fast. I often see some of the pros at these rides so you can expect to go fast.
