Did My First Crit Race Today
Well i did 2 races today and they weren't all that bad. my first race which was a Cat 5 race would have been good except when my chain fell off DAMN!! lol. my second race was a CAT 4/5 race and i stuck through but finished last.. owell at least i didn't POP like a lot of others did. i did not even train at all so i can only see it getting better. i definitely realized people are scared to pedal through a corner so there was a lot of the accordion affect going on. heres a few pics

Congrats
How did your chain fall off? You shouldn't need to shift the front in a crit.

drops....drops..drops.......................HOODS!!
You didn't train AT ALL?
Also, if you shift the front when you lose a chain, it'll often go back on. Why were you shifting?

Most races in TX I run an 11-23, and either a 42 or 44 small ring. Couple of exceptions where I'll go to something lower but there are only a couple of courses that come to mind.
I tend to be in the wind more than most guys and I'd rather not cross chain and grind out the big ring in some of those headwinds.

I actually have to wear mine underneath, otherwise when i look down at any point during the ride to chek my computer or anything my shades flip up a bit. Gets a bit annoying having to keep pulling them back down. (Oakley Half Flak Jackets).

congrats.
like other said.. number, jersey, back through the number.. 6 pins.
If you're chain fell off.. you could have declared a mechanical, and gotten a free lap.. and gotten back in the first race...
Most crits.. yeap... nothing but big chain ring... I'll change my casette and either run an 11-23 or an 11-25... but start in the big ring and stay there..
even in the "hill country" of central TX

yea i have a 11-27 cassette with a 53/39 crank. i bet the slack of not being in the big ring + all the bumps made the chain jump and come off. i definitely wont make that mistake again.

Sounds like you had a good time. That's key!
Chain falling off is usually not considered a mechanical. It's more like "you should have done something different, adjustment or riding style."
Bumpy roads = big ring for more chain tension.
But that's what all the "first races" are for - to learn what it takes to race. I did things like forgetting my floor pump (at the race actually), miss races because I was late because of traffic (hint - leave earlier than you think you need to leave), forget my helmet (as recently as last year), etc etc.
I like to start in the big ring, second biggest cog. One thing I learned is if I start in the big-big and back pedal to clip in, I may derail the chain.
I'm sure you'll do fine next time. Have fun out there,
cdr
