NC State Wolfpack Cycling Classic 2/13-2/14

Due to the weather here in NC, this will be my season opener. I'm definitely in for 1 day (Sat.) and working on the missus for Sunday. Looking forward to "that hill". Anyone else in?

Flatballer have you ridden the course for Sunday?

I'm in for Saturday in the 1/2/3. Driving down from DC with the old college team on Friday evening so I can send off some of my proteges in their first-ever races on the collegiate side.

It'll be my first race of the year and probably my longest all year, since I'm just a Cat 3 and most of our races are 55-65 miles. I've only done one 1/2/3 race (circuit race) before so it should be a fun challenge. My longest RR to date has been 54 miles! (Sucks that they took away the separate Cat 3 and Cat 4 fields.)

I'm 99% sure I'm not racing Sunday because (a) it'll be at 8 a.m. and I hate early morning races - especially alone, and (b) my legs probably won't be functioning after Saturday.

I'm in for Sat at least, 4/5, season opener, first official race to boot. I may do Sunday, still debating.

I'm doing both: my first races. I rode the course for the Top of the hill race (Sunday): it is pretty brutal -- as hilly as it can get in that area, you won't rest much during that ride. As a bonus there are an incredible amount of potholes all over the course and a sprinkling of gravel.... Not really looking forward to it.

Anyone raced these last year?

That's when the race is for me Saturday (Cat 4/5). Weather.com puts the temps around effin' freezin' ass cold then. I'm considering doing the Masters instead at 2:30 but talk about hating riding alone...

I've never ridden the Sunday course. I hear the snowplows destroyed it pretty well. We're gonna do what we can to clean up the gravel and mark the potholes, but it still might be rough.

I'll be in Collegiate C both days.

Nobody has raced the Sunday course for a while, we usually had crits on Sunday (and a popular course at that) but the school destroyed our course with a new library construction and we couldn't find a good replacement.

The problem with the potholes is that they are on downhills... I heard some raced the course last week and a bunch blew out rims... Potholes notwithstanding, it is a cool and challenging course.

I'll be in the Collegiate B's both days.

First race of the year. First ride of over 2.5 hours of the year.

I thought you were moving up to B's FB?

I should be, but I'm not feeling real confident at the moment. I've also never won a race, and we're a little weak in the Cs this year. All that together, I'm gonna start out in the Cs and see how it goes. If I win I'll move up.

Yeah, I've never won anything either, but i figure B's will make me stronger so maybe a win will come in the summer.

I'm sure I'll see ya around sometime soon.

Looks like a cold race.

Saturday Night through Sunday Night
Mostly clear. Lows in the lower 20s. Highs in the lower 40s.

Hrmmm, this may change my mind about Sunday's race. Maybe I'll do a Z1/2 ride out there tomorrow or Thurs to get a feel for it (those particular roads are along one of my favorite routes anyway). That may help me make up my mind.

^^^

They did say that they would try and either mark or fill the potholes before the race. We shall see.

I might not be there now. I've got a funeral to attend either Friday or Saturday, a 6 hour drive away in Knoxville.

Hopefully I can make it back for Sunday (if funeral is Friday I might even get back for Saturday, dunno).

Rim killing potholes on the descents? Not fun. Where are we going? West Virginia?

Too bad about the crit course being taken over by a library. That was an awesome course!

I'll be there freezing and seriously out of shape in WA. I hope those Harris Teeter pro women don't show up this year (WA is run with W Open). I don't like racing alone. With even more snow expected for this week in the DC area, I was thinking of scrapping this race. However, even if I do wind up out there solo, at least I'll be outside. On my bike. That's worth the trip itself.

Haven't seen the course, but I doubt it's that bad.

Remember that downhill pothole at WVU that's about 6 feet wide and 8 feet long? Now that's a pothole.

The crit course will be back after they finish the library, but that's gonna be a while. They just took up the space for construction (and didn't even ask us!).

And yeah, I won't be there at all. Getting back to Raleigh Sunday evening. Oh well.

The Saturday course is the same as last year, isn't it? I don't recall that being too bad. I'll be in MB for at least Saturday, probably Sunday too.

Btw, if you are on the fence for B, move up. If you start in B, it will help. C is a big old crap shoot in any case; I would not recommend sticking around to win something to validate moving up because there are so many other riders in the early season races and sprints at the end will be a real crap shoot. I moved up to B and I rarely snuck into the MC top ten in the 2 years I raced MC.

Saturday is the same as last year. We're gonna be going out and putting cold patch on the potholes, as well as filling them with gravel and then getting all the gravel off the road. We'll make it all nice. Also putting up signs to warn of bad sections that are coming up.

Does anyone know where you would post it if this gets canceled? There is nothing on ncscca and no website listed.

I would hate to drive 2.5 hrs for nothing...

thanks

It's still going on as of this post. I get frequent email updates from my team regarding all this stuff. It'll be fun, just watch for ice.
