What "benefits" do you get from your team/club?
What kind of "benefits" are available through your team?
What is available through your team? (Coaching, Masseuse, Nutritionist, Mechanics, Bikes etc)
How much coaching and training/racing advice do you get from your team/club?
Do you mostly train alone or with your teammates or do you have a private coach/trainer?
Just wondering ....
J.
PS If you are from San Diego area, what is the best team to join with a good coaching and training program?

my team is probably one of the better funded teams in my area. We get (subject to completing volunteer hours and other budget constraints) hotel fees, registration fees, shop discount, and coaching. Most of us try to train together at least on the weekends. For me, it's a bit of a drive to get out to where the club is centered, but it's good since the roads in my area aren't conducive to training.
edit: cat 3/4/5 AFAIK we have no 1/2

Camaraderie, war stories, friendship, help in the pack. Those are the most important. We also get product discounts from sponsors and every once in a while some free stuff from sponsors.
But I mainly ride with the team because they're a good group of people I enjoy being around and mutually suffering with.

Do you live in North County.?. Check out Celo Pacific or Swami's Athletic in Encinitas...
Not a racer, but teams offer you a support group , incentives to do ever more, new friends with a common bond..
New drinking buddies...Ultra Lite of course.. Even if it tastes just so so..

Coaching and training are good things to look for. Although I think formal versions of both help, you'd be surprised how many coaches don't know what they're talking about (SD area should have some pretty serious coaches based on the number of fit people I saw driving cars with coaching ads on them).
But in bike racing, once you get to a certain fitness level (and it'll take you all of 6 months to get there, if you're reasonably fit, and probably half that time), it's about gleaning knowledge. You get that from friends/teammates. You also get honest feedback if you have good teammates. Like "wtf were you thinking swerving like that?!" You'll get that feedback from non-teammates too, but you may not know if it's accurate or not
I rode once with Celo Pacific. They were very nice to a new rider on their group ride. I also saw some Swamis riders at Red Trolley, and they seemed to know one another (and they were reasonably concerned about one of their guys that fell). That's a good sign, when teammates know each other. When they don't, not a great sign.
Whatever team has NOW on their butts ("No Opportunity Wasted") has, from what I could tell, very smooth, very savy riders. Not sure how strong they are but they are good riders.

In races, the selflessness of the individual members is incredible.
...well, selflessness between team members anyway
There is a lot of experience on this team and it is shared well, especially with those who are newer to the sport.

Without a doubt racing on this team and training with you, J and Ex has made me better bike racer. I learned more last year about how to race a bike than in all my years of cycling combined.

A great group of guys and gals to ride with.
Someone to yell at me on group rides.
Better pack skills.
Lots of experience to tap into.
Some friendly faces at the last race.
That's what I singed up for. The icing on the cake isn't too bad either.
A lot of brands just above wholesale (cheaper than anything on ebay, even a lot of used stuff).
Free kits depending on how many races you do.
Discounts on coaching.

discounts - steep (used to work for the shop and have kept my discount privileges)
coaching - no shortage of people telling me what I'm doing wrong (there are a couple of old timers that know their stuff)
Massages - that's what my personal soigneur is for (wife), though I give her more massages than I get.
It is quite a diverse group of riders. very fun.

Our kit rocks..as a matter of fact I was admiring it yesterday thinking how damn good it looks...besides most guys only get to see the back our shorts..I'm thinking that the Junior Diabetes Foundation must be getting a lot donations from Texas bike racers.

fairly typical parts and shop and schwag and trainer discounts.
nothing really exciting.
i've gotten my team dues back in gear discount on a sram red kit already though.
