This Is Probably Another Stupid Question

But are Juniors (Up to 18 years) allowed to join races in which the Junior Category is not offered, but Cat5 is?

For instance, if a race has all categories including Cat5, but does not have a group for Juniors, will i be able to race as a Cat5 racer, my racing Age is 17 years old.

I know of some Juniors that are already Cat4 and Cat3.

But if a race includes a Cat5 group, even if I'm 17, can i register for it?

Are you a Cat 5? If so, yes you can. If not, no you can't.

you can race your cat, regardless of age. you still have your gear restrictions even if you're in a non-junior exclusive class.

Well I don't have any points yet, but in other words, is there a specific age you need to be to be a Cat5 racer? I think i do double as a Cat5, but i also have a choice to join Junior races.

Not an uncommon question.

Even when I put "Cat 5s must do the Cat 5 race, regardless of age", I still get 4-5 people show up for the Junior race (which is after the Cat 5 race), trying to register for the Junior race even though they're a Cat 5. Specifically, I still get 4-5 parents of Cat 5 Juniors. Telling them their kid can't race after they got up at some stupid early hour and drove a stupid amount of time usually doesn't go over well with them.

I also get, oh, maybe 20-30 Masters riders who ask me the same thing.

This year I put in Junior Cat 1-2-3-4 and Masters Cat 1-2-3-4. So far no one has asked the question.

In other words, good on you for asking now and not at the registration desk.

Answer: You must fulfill both category and age requirements for a given race. In your case you can do races that allow Cat 5s in them (Cat 5, Cat 4-5) which also allow racers your age and over to enter (generic Cat 5 race, Junior Cat 5 race). You're not allowed to enter a Masters 30+ Cat 5 race (or anything where the minimum age is above your age).

Rulebook:
https://www.usacycling.org/news/user/story.php?id=4220

The whole thing, at one time:
https://www.usacycling.org/forms/USAC_rulebook.pdf

When I decided I wanted to race, my "mentor" (he was the same age as me but had been racing a couple years) told me to "read the rulebook". If I had any questions, I should ask him. He quizzed me on a few basic concepts.

What is a free lap?
When do you get scored for finishing a race?
What is a "prime"?
Do you have to finish the race to get a prime?
What is a gear limit?

There were some odd questions which made me have to research. Like:
How do you score a race that ended in a dead heat?
Do you have to have bar plugs in your bars?

It was a very helpful bit of advice.
